Magic: The Gathering’s 2022 includes Classic Worlds, Fortnite, and Street Fighter cards

Wizards of the Coast hosted an exhibition this morning highlighting what 2022 will look like for its flagship card game, Magic: The Gathering. Not only will Planeswalkers return to a couple of beloved worlds, but Wizards will also roll out the red carpet for early Universes Beyond outfits, including some new partnerships with big games like Fortnite and Street Fighter.

Universes Beyond is a way to bring fan-favorite franchises into the Magic ecosystem, and Wizards has taken on some big names to bring them on over the next year and beyond. Fortnite will make its Magic debut through a release of Secret Lair, a limited-time mini-set that can be purchased directly from Wizards of the Coast. Unlike other Universes Beyond cards, the Fortnite game pieces will be reprints of existing Magic cards, but with art from the battle royale giant. You can see the first art shown from this set at the top of the article. There was no expected deadline for the release of Fortnite Secret Lair.

Also on the horizon for Universes Beyond is a Secret Lair release celebrating the 35th anniversary of Street Fighter. These cards will be mechanically unique, and versions set in the Magic universe will arrive at a later date. We were treated to a look at Chun-li’s card art, which was said to feature the Multikicker mechanic, which is hilarious and tasty for obvious reasons. These cards will go on sale sometime in 2022.

While Warhammer 40k Commander decks and the full Lord of the Rings set have been around for quite some time, we got more information about them during today’s presentation. Warhammer 40k will be represented with four ready-to-play Commander decks with art depicting characters and locations in that universe for both new cards and reprints. These decks are scheduled to launch in the second half of 2022, along with some Secret Lair products.

Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-Earth is the official name of this complete set from Universes Beyond, which will now arrive in 2023. It will be legal in the modern building format. Tales of Middle-Earth features iconic characters like Gandalf, Gollum, Aragorn, and Frodo. Taking beats from Tolkien’s stories, Wizards promises that players will “fight for the One Ring, conspire with Saruman, or travel to the heights of Mount Doom.” This set will also be accompanied by four Commander decks and Lord of the Rings-themed Secret Lair deliveries.

For those looking forward to 2022 for standard legal sets, the presentation did not disappoint. The first set to arrive next year will be the long-awaited return to a plane inspired by Japanese tradition in Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty. Taking place 2000 years after the original Kamigawa sets of 2004 and 2005, Neon Dynasty is a cyberpunk version of the airplane.

After that, Wizards will take us to a new plane with an old school mobster theme. Streets of New Capenna is a set featuring criminal families of three-colored demons in a city originally built by angels. The art displayed for this set appears to feature an Armored Planeswalker and pinstripe suit known as Ob Nixilis. The streets of Nueva Capenna should arrive sometime in the spring of 2022.

For the summer set, Dominaria United, we will return to the plane where Magic originated. Kicking off the game’s 30th anniversary celebration a little earlier, Dominaria United will allow players to explore the story-filled world again with classic characters and locations returning in card form. Expect a lot of legendary creatures to appear to build some spicy Commander beers.

In the fourth quarter of 2022, the last standard product of the year will be The Brothers War, an event referenced in some of the early Magic cards. Set years ago, The Brothers War tells the story of the battle between Urza and his brother Mishra, which engulfed the plane of Dominaria in all-out war and set in motion the events that have occurred across the multiverse since the inception of the game. in the early 1990s.

Cleaning up the rest of the ads, of which there are a ton, fans can expect the following products:

Unfinity – A new silver edged eraser set featuring a space circus / carnival / amusement park theme. Expect lots of jokes and quirks, just like any other Un-set release. Also included are new basic lands and shock lands set in outer space. Unfinity will arrive in the second quarter of 2022.

Commander Legends: Battle for Baldur’s Gate – Combining two crazy ideas from last year, this Commander-centric set will take place in the legendary Baldur’s Gate and will also arrive in Q2 2022.

Double Masters 2022 and JumpStart 2022 – These add-on games are coming next year. JumpStart 2022 in particular will feature a new Magic card in each pack and will have special versions of cards with anime art.

Netflix animated series Magic The Gathering – The long-in-development series has its scripts locked and is now in production. The story will follow Gideon Jura, a planeswalker originating from the plane of Theros. Gideon will be played by Brandon Routh, whom some may know from Superman returns among other roles. The program launches sometime in 2022.

Innistrad dual function – Combining both of this fall’s monster themed sets in draft format, complete with new art treatments based on monsters from classic movies.

The wizards certainly put all their cards on the table for the upcoming year of content. There’s a lot to look forward to with classic airplanes and stories, as well as worlds Magic has yet to travel to.
