House of ashes is the latest entry in Supermassive Games’ Dark Pictures Anthology. You may have already seen Rachel King in our previous trailers. In this 15 minute game, you will see more of his character and learn more about his relationships with others.
So today I want to talk about the star character of House of ashes, Rachel King, who is played in the game by none other than the talented Ashley Tisdale, “High School Musical” star, pop star, and actor. On House of ashesRachel is a CIA officer tasked with searching for weapons of mass destruction. In the dark under the Zagros Mountains, find much more than you bargained for!
For those who don’t know yet House of ashes it takes place near the end of the 2003 Iraq war. Coalition forces are scouring the country for evidence of weapons of mass destruction, believed to be buried underground in secret storage depots. In our history, the allies have the help of the Caelus program – an innovative satellite radar system that can penetrate the ground to detect underground structures. When Caelus detects a suspicious structure on the border with Iran, a Special Forces team led by Rachel King is sent to investigate. Unfortunately, Caelus was wrong: the structure they ended up storming turns out to be a 4,000-year-old Sumerian temple. A temple that now houses a nest of hideous creatures!
From the beginning, we designed Rachel as a tough character. He is in charge of an elite team operating in hostile territory, so he must be able to make tough decisions under pressure. Interesting characters are always layered, so we wonder what could pull such a person out of their comfort zone. The answer was clear: his own personal relationships.
Rachel’s tough and uncompromising demeanor surely couldn’t persist in her own love life – she must have a softer side! With that in mind, we created her marriage to Eric, a genius scientist assigned to the United States Air Force (and the mastermind behind the Caelus program). When our story begins, Eric and Rachel’s marriage is on the rocks: after a breakup, they have both become engrossed in their work and have not seen each other for a year. Rachel has moved on, starting a new relationship with Nick, one of the Marines on her team. When Eric unexpectedly arrives at the base and takes over his command, all the problems in this love triangle are exposed.
When choosing Rachel, we needed someone who could act tough, but also had a softer side; Ashley Tisdale had all the qualities we were looking for. In addition to being a fantastic actress, she has a sensitivity that supported Rachel in her most vulnerable moments. Ashley also has great comedic timing, so she really gave Rachel a head start by offering cutting criticism. Rachel’s journey has some real twists and turns, some of which should remain a mystery for now, and like all Dark Pictures characters, she can die in a number of horrible ways. It was tremendous fun leading her through all this madness, and she approached it with great humor and boundless tenacity.
In the video you can see Rachel and Eric under fire from the Iraqi guard who has also been trapped underground in this ancient temple. At this point, the threat from our monsters is not so obvious to them, so they continue the fight and Rachel and Eric need to escape. Another brief tremor throws Rachel over the side of a crevasse and Eric struggles desperately to hold onto her as he tries to avoid being shot. This would be a difficult situation even if they were complete strangers, but Rachel is Eric’s wife and as a player you will face some very difficult decisions here: cut the rope to save yourself or hang on and save Rachel, but you risk being shoot. This scenario can play out in a number of different ways depending on the choices you make, not only at this point, but your actions in previous scenes will have consequences for this very crucial scene as well.
We hope you enjoyed this short excerpt on working with Ashley Tisdale – it was a lot of fun leading her through all this madness, and she approached it with great humor and limitless tenacity. We can’t wait for you to meet his character in the game.
