Animal Crossing: Who is Brewster and why are people excited for him?

Animal Crossing players’ favorite coffee-throwing pigeon is moving to the New Horizons museum back in November, Nintendo confirmed during the direct presentation on Thursday September 2021. Of course, we don’t have a ton of information yet, but Nintendo gave us a look at the latest expansion for Animal Crossing via a new sign posted on the museum in its short clip: The Roost, open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Nintendo offered an early look at what is presumably the new space, albeit a blur with text overlaid on top. Longtime Animal Crossing fans knew immediately what this was implying: Brewster is opening his coffee shop, The Roost, on your island.

Yes New Horizons is your first Animal Crossing game, you may wonder: Who is Brewster? What is The Roost? And why is everyone so excited for me to get here? We’ve got answers so you can get acquainted with the bird ahead of Nintendo’s next Animal Crossing Direct in October.

Who is Brewster and what is The Roost?

Brewster is beloved, a fan favorite since his first appearance in 2005. Animal Crossing: Wild World. Since then, he has run a cafeteria within the various museums of the game until New leaf, when he opened his own store. You can find it behind the counter; he is the dove with little circular glasses and a stylish vest with an apron. Naturally, he is very passionate about coffee, and that remained constant throughout. Wild World, City folklore, and New leaf.

Although his specific demeanor is slightly varied depending on the game we’re talking about, Brewster generally starts off a bit shy, kind of like Sable from the clothing store. You will become more familiar with him the closer you get for coffee, and he will start to become friendlier. Sometimes you can get special drinks like pigeon milk. (He’s also particular about how players drink coffee – if you don’t drink it hot, you’ll get on their bad side.)

Brewster also likes gyros, the unique little Animal Crossing figures that are sometimes alive. On City folklore, players can store their collection at The Roost.

On New leaf, Brewster’s role got a little more complicated. He’s still there serving coffee, but players who befriend him will have options to order takeout and then eventually land a part-time job at The Roost, so that you too can make coffee for the villagers. Regular customers of The Roost can also get specialty coffee.

How will he be in New Horizons?

Well the short answer is that we don’t know yet. Nintendo will host an Animal Crossing Direct in October, it doesn’t even have an exact date yet, before it arrives with a new free content update in November.

However, it is implied that The Roost will return inside the museum. The logo, a green dove holding a red coffee mug, was displayed on the sign posted in the museum, and after the clip, Nintendo had a screen showing its face. The blurry image briefly shown during Thursday’s live could also be the interior of The Roost. Wherever it is, it sure looks cozy!

Given how consistent Brewster’s role has been in past entries in the franchise, it seems likely that he will serve coffee. Of course, there is always the possibility that things will change: in Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp, the mobile game, Brewster hosted an event called Brewster’s Sweet Harvest, in which “vineyard” themed gifts were handed out to participants, such as a barrel of grapes and a trellis.

What is the problem?

It may appear that Brewster has not added a your from the gameplay to other games in the Animal Crossing franchise, and that’s partially true. The coffee you serve does not bring any specific benefit to a character who buys it; the incentive is that you can befriend another character in the game world. To me, Brewster’s presence felt so natural given the sense of daily ritual that draws me to the Animal Crossing franchise. I’ll pull the weeds, water my garden, and have a Brewster coffee. Roost itself also feels like a community gathering place, another place where you can have new interactions with other villagers. Also, KK Slider usually performs there! Get that dog out of the rain and into The Roost.

A lot of people also really enjoyed having that part-time job at The Roost in New leaf. Serving coffee is a fun little minigame that is unlike anything currently offered in New Horizons, and many fans are eager to see what Nintendo could repeat there.

Others are also excited about the prospect of gyros returning to the game. Because The Roost was a place for gyro storage in City folklore, some fans are hoping Nintendo will put this basic series back in the game with New Horizons. If that happens, it means a host of new items to find and collect across the island, and a host of new game objectives.

Is there something else next to Brewster?

It seems likely! Given how long Nintendo has gone without a substantial New Horizons update, players are eager to have something else to sink their teeth into. During Thursday’s Nintendo Direct, Nintendo hinted that there is more to the update than just Brewster – along with Brewster’s image, there is text that reads “and more!”

As for what that “and more!” He’s referring to is anyone’s guess, but we’ll learn more at Animal Crossing Direct in October. We will keep you posted on the exact date of that event.
