Smash Bros. Ultimate’s latest DLC character is Sora from Kingdom Hearts

The last DLC character in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate will be Sora from Kingdom Hearts.

Announced by series creator Masahiro Sakurai in a ‘Final Presentation’, a new trailer referenced the original Smash Bros. Ultimate reveal. It showed Mario launching a fireball that opened a portal, bringing Sora into the world of Smash Bros. Sora will be added to the game on October 18. It will cost $ 5.99 USD as a standalone, and is part of Volume 2 of the FIghters Pass.

Sakurai says that Sora’s controls are “relatively straightforward”, but he will still be different from other characters. It’s made for aerial combat, but its weakness is weight – it weighs less than Young Link or Isabelle, which means you’ll want to avoid hitting. Unsurprisingly, his basic attacks use the Keyblade, and various attacks are designed to hit enemies in the air, allowing him to begin aerial combos. Sora can also use some of the magic from Kingdom Hearts – some are used to damage, while others are used as cosmetic-only taunts. The goal is for Sora to control as much as possible as he did in the original Kingdom Hearts.

Sora’s base design is inspired by the original Kingdom Hearts game, but his other costumes reference other games in the Kingdom Hearts series. It will include voice over options in English and Japanese. The DLC also adds 9 Kingdom Hearts songs to the huge soundtrack, and for those who played Kingdom Hearts: Melody of Memory, their save data will earn them an additional song.

Sora also has a new stage, based on Hollow Bastion, the castle that Maleficent inhabits towards the end of the original Kingdom Hearts. A fairly simple, single-deck setting with little time or stock also sees it transform into a void-like location within the Dive to the Heart realm, with stained glass designs showing characters from the Square Enix series.

Kazuya from Tekken was added to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate in June. Along with Pyra from Xenoblade and Sephiroth from Final Fantasy 7, it’s been an exciting 12 months for new fighters. These iconic characters were also joined by Dante from Devil May Cry and Dovahkiin from Skyrim in June, who joined in the form of Mii fighter outfits.

While this could mark the end of Smash Bros. Ultimate, Sakurai himself has made it clear that he will not be abandoning development on the game any time soon. It will be very interesting to see what Sakurai does next, especially since the much-loved director has only created one non-Smash Bros. game, Kid Icarus: Uprising, since 2008.

Other announcements in the storefront included Splatoon Mii Fighter (Octoling, Judd) costumes and a Doom Slayer Mii costume, and the reveal that the main Kingdom Hearts series is coming to Switch as cloud games.
