Whenever the fall season approaches, I look for games that I can play on those cold, rainy fall afternoons. The kind of games that exude atmosphere and allow you to disappear into their world. One of those games is definitely Alder blood. The sleek art style and wonderfully spooky soundtrack will appeal to any fan of grim settings and turn-based tactical combat, which requires you to think, stealth, and plan encounters will make them stick around.
On Alder bloodYou take on the role of a boss of Hunters, half beast, half human protectors of humanity, who spend their lives fighting hordes of evil monsters that threaten humanity. The battle royale takes place on encounter maps where your objective is to kill the monsters there, reach a specific location, or retrieve an object of interest. As you can see, not everything is combat all the time and sometimes it may even be better to avoid a fight if you are outmatched.
But monsters are not the only threat to your hunters, hunger is another. When you traverse the world map, you have to make sure to search for enough food to keep your squad going. When camping on the road, you can also rearrange your hunters’ gear to better prepare them for the fights ahead. Alder blood lacks the randomness of similar titles like XCOM they’re built around it, but that doesn’t mean the game doesn’t challenge you or make you scream at your console when something goes wrong. That part, of course, I count it as a plus in the genre. A game like that has to keep you invested.
At the time of writing this, I’ve already finished most of the game and it keeps me wanting to play it every day after work. I keep coming back to see more of the story. To see what kind of mission I will get to overcome next. What kind of loot will I acquire. Appropriately for an RPG, it keeps you addicted to the game loop and makes you speculate where the plot will go even hours after playing. There is no room for mistakes and each one is paid with life and blood. Only by carefully threading your actions, strategies and smart management of your scarce resources will you have a chance to survive. Then something happened. An old friend, but with a strange face.
