Square Enix reveals its canceled game Survival Horror Tomb Raider

As part of the Tomb Raider 25th anniversary celebrations, Square Enix has released three new videos with a variety of details from the canceled survival horror game Tomb Raider: Ascension.

As it is shown in Youtube, all three videos focus on different elements of what might have been for Ascension, had the game not been superseded by the preferred reboot of the franchise in 2013. In the first clip, the editor displays a variety of concept art for the game where fans can see the island setting, as well as various character designs.

“After focusing on the concept of a survival story on a remote island,” Square Enix says in the description of the video on YouTube. “Crystal began developing what was internally called Tomb Raider: Ascension. At one point, Ascension felt closer to a horror game than a Tomb Raider title. Over time, the concept evolved into the story of origin told in the 2013 reboot, keeping the key components of survival with a hint of supernatural terror. “

the second of the three videos shown by Square seems to highlight this well. Showing the first few images, Ascension seems to have leaned more towards the horror genre, as Lara can be seen fighting her way through a series of darker, dimmer-lit areas and battling a variety of twisted monsters.

Throughout the seven-minute video, fans are enjoying a reasonably substantial amount of content, with scenes also showing Lara traversing the island environment on horseback and what appears to be a fairly intense boss battle in light of Moon. According to the editor, it was during their work on Ascension that the team “focused on telling an origin story through the lens of survival,” and some of those horror elements were seemingly left out.

Croft Manor through the ages

the final video posted to YouTube features some initial logo concepts for Ascension and a number of designs for its box art. While interesting to watch, the highlight of the clip is the inclusion of some voiceover work that, according to the editor, was recorded to “capture the tone” of Lara’s difficult journey ahead. The narration in the clip does well to set up the version of Croft’s reboot, distinguishing it from the iterations of the character seen previously in the series.

“You think you know me,” Lara says in the video. “I think you’ve seen me before. The British princess, a rich girl with a pretty face, shiny guns and a knack for gymnastics. I think you’ve mixed me up with someone else.”

“I am not perfect. I am not bulletproof. I fight. I bleed. I am cold. I lose myself. I have doubts. I know pain. I know fear. One day, I will become a legend. A warrior.” A hero. An assailant. But first, I will be a survivor. Do you still think you know me? Think again. “

In the full range of images displayed, it’s not hard to see how Ascension eventually went on to become the publisher’s 2013 reboot. While many of the original ideas shown never saw the light of day, the clips seem to have gone well with the Tomb Raider community. In the comment sections of the videos, several fans have praised the idea of a terror-led Tomb Raider title and some have even called for Square Enix and Crystal Dynamics to consider making the game now.
