Timothée Chalamet’s Dune character technically poops in his pants

Denis Villeneuve’s Dune he’s finally arrived, along with his stacked cast of Hollywood’s most handsome faces. Timothée Chalamet and Zendaya! Rebecca Ferguson and Oscar Isaac! Josh Brolin, Dave Bautista, Jason Momoa, Javier Bardem!

But there is a dark secret hidden behind those beautiful faces. A secret that DuneHowever faithful an adaptation may be, it has simply been undone. Or maybe removed. Maybe canceled.

Regardless, I call this cowardice.

This you must remember, by the breadth of DuneIt lasts two hours and 35 minutes. Whether you have your butt in a movie theater or snuggled softly on your living room sofa cushions.

Everybody in Dune poops in their pants

Any film adaptation of Dune He has a lot of images on the page to translate to the screen, but the most humane of them might be the ever-present fixed suits, garb of the Fremen tribes that inhabit the desert.

Street style outfits are less of a fashion product and more of a necessity. The climate of the planet Arakkis is so severe that an unprotected human body will die from exposure in a matter of hours. The technological miracle of the outfit is that it captures all the moisture that the human body produces and turns it back into drinking water.

Everybody of humidity.

At Villenueve’s Dune, Dr. Liet-Kynes (Sharon Duncan-Brewster) explains her role while adjusting the zippers on Duke Leto and Paul’s suits.

“A stillsuit is a high-efficiency filtration system. Even this early in the morning, you wouldn’t survive two hours without one of these. Refreshes the body. Recycle water lost through sweat. The movements of your body provide the power. Inside the mask you will find a tube that will allow you to drink the recycled water. In good working order, your suit will not lose more than one thimble of water a day. ”

It is almost identical to a scene in the Frank Herbert original. Dune, in which planetologist Liet Kynes does all of this and instructs Leto and Paul to inhale through their mouths and exhale through the suit’s nose plugs, to allow even the moisture from their breath to be recycled. It also says, “With a Fremen suit in good working order, you won’t lose more than one thimble of moisture a day.”

But there is one aspect of the stillsuit function that Kynes mentions in the book which is no mentioned in the movie. Even the book only really mentions it once. But this fact about distillation suits is unforgettable.

Sounds in the background of Dune like a low, high-pitched moan in a beautiful concert hall.

“Urine and feces,” says Liet Kynes, “are processed on the pads of the thighs.”

Most of the characters in Dune They are not Fremen by birth, but in Arakkis they adopt the distillation suit as a matter of survival. The cast of Dune it’s absolutely packed with actors known for their influence on Hollywood and for being pleasing to the eye. I think it’s vitally important that we appreciate the movie and those actors for that. It’s also vitally important that we remember that everyone in him is canonically pooping his pants regularly, as a matter of social custom.

When Paul Atreides from Chalamet and Lady Jessica from Rebecca Ferguson spend the night in the desert in their neat, water-absorbent tent, they aren’t squatting in the sand to urinate. When Jason Momoa’s Duncan Idaho returns from living among the Fremen, he has also been living without a bathroom. And when does the Chani of Zendaya lead that raid against the Harkonnen gatherers?

As desert-born Fremen, they all do it in their pants every day.

And that’s what the unlimited freedom of science fiction is all about.
