MTG Innistrad: Crimson Vow Card Teasers Include Powerful New Ring

Magic: The Gathering wraps up a spooky double feature Thursday with his second Innistrad Plane card game, now live on Magic: The Gathering Arena. Innistrad: Crimson Vow is the sequel to Innistrad: Midnight Huntand will be available in retail in November. Here’s your first look at what’s in store, with comments from product architect Mike Turian and global construction and narrative design manager Meris Mullaley.

Mullaley says that Crimson Vow It should be a lot of fun for fans of Magicdeep tradition. When Midnight hunt was released in October, Wizards set the table with five long-form fiction pieces written by K. Arsenault Rivera. They are still available online if you want to catch up on the narrative, or just need a dose of meaty pulp fiction in your life. In short, the humans of the realm did their best for Harvestide’s annual ritual, hoping to restore the balance of day and night. That was interrupted by a deadly werewolf attack. As a result, the land has turned into an endless night, the perfect setting for hungry vampires to come out and play.

The centerpiece of this particular ensemble, Mullaley says, is Olivia Voldaren’s wedding. The vampire is eager to consolidate her power on Innistrad, uniting two of the most powerful families on the plane. Her boyfriend? None other than Innistrad’s first and most powerful vampire, Edgar Markov. That means it’s up to the Guardians (or at least what’s left of him, after Gideon Jura’s death) to break the party and free the human population.

Turian says that players should expect more than 30 vampire cards in the main set. They will be accompanied by blood tokens, which will be generated by certain cards and actions and consumed to make some vampires more powerful.

A returning mechanic for this new set is called a riot. Its function has been modified from past incarnations, says Turian. For example, in Dorothea, Vengeful Victim, allows players to turn a creature into an enchantment. Expect additional clever uses of mechanics that take advantage of these types of double-sided cards throughout the set.

The exploit mechanic also returns with Innistrad: Crimson Vow. It was first introduced with Tarkir Dragons in 2015.

A new mechanic for this set is called training. Allow creatures to become more powerful by fighting alongside other more powerful creatures.

An early example shared with the press is called Savior of Ollenbock, a human soldier creature shown wielding a twin chakram. Once they’re all charged, hopefully their death will help wreak additional chaos on the battlefield by bringing some exiled creatures back into the game.

Finally, dividing increases the cost of a card to “literally divide the words,” says Turian, making those spells more powerful. Cards, like Dig Up, that include that mechanic, could become a must-have asset in many different formats.

Fans of the Commander format should keep an eye out for the pre-built Vampiric Bloodline red / black deck, featuring Strefan, Maurer Progenitor on the cover. You will find many hungry undead inside. Meanwhile, Millicent, Restless Revenant leads the Spirit Squadron’s pre-built deck, bringing plenty of ghosts and spirits to the party.

The collection and collection power-ups will include some cards focused on the commander. Of particular interest, Turian says, is the wedding ring. It is an artifact that creates a duplicate of itself in your opponent, allowing you to draw cards and gain life whenever they do.

It is one of those great Magic cards that feel like a troll when used, but are actually both thematically appropriate and mechanically interesting.

Innistrad: Crimson Vow It arrives for digital formats on November 11 and retail, such as physical cards, on November 19. The product range will include Draft, Set, Collector, and Theme Boosters, as well as a full bundle and a gift bundle, plus the two Commander decks listed above. You can reserve cards in your friendly local game store and online.
