SWTOR surprisingly postpones the release of the new expansion to 2022 – many fans were expecting it

The new expansion Legacy of the Sith should actually be released in December 2021 to coincide with the 10th anniversary of Star Wars: The Old Republic. But now the release has been postponed by almost 2 months. The reason given by the developers is that they need more time to complete. But a lot of the content will be on the test server this week.

When does the new expansion appear? Legacy of the Sith was unveiled in the summer of 2021 and the release was scheduled for next Tuesday, December 14th. But now there is a big shift.

The expansion is now expected to come out on February 15, 2022; 2 months later than originally planned.

The developers explain in a blog post that they need more time to meet their own expectations:

The team has been working very hard on Legacy of the Sith for a while now, but the closer we got to the launch date, the more it became clear that we needed more time.

To guarantee that we deliver the experience we want it to be and that you deserve it, we are currently focusing on thoroughly testing the many areas of the game that we have changed.

The previous expansion Onslaught, which appeared in 2019, was postponed shortly before the release.

Do the players have to be patient until 2022? Yes and no, because some content was already playable on the PTR. Another update is to appear next week, with which all content – with the exception of the story missions – will land on the test server.

So if you want to explore new areas or test mechanics, you can theoretically do so as early as December, but will not take the progress into the final game.

Fans expected a postponement

How is the announcement received? Many users commented on reddit that they expected the postponement. Because there seem to have been some problems on the PTR. In addition, for some users there was simply too little information and too little PR for the extension (via reddit):

  • Chriches1984 writes for example: “I waited for it because it just wasn’t finished. Everyone who’s used the PTR knew this, but what worries me is that Bioware only released it a week before it was released. “
  • PedleTwins, on the other hand, is relieved about the postponement: “I’m happy. Better a delayed release than an incorrect release. “
  • The user MaximumButthurt wondered about the lack of PR: “Yes, that wasn’t the hype you would expect from a big release … probably because the reactions to the tests were mostly negative.”

In addition, the new expansion should be the starting signal for a number of events, including one especially for returnees and newcomers. It is currently not known whether this will take place in January anyway or whether it will also be postponed.
