Hillemann from Lübeck and the eighth: After crashing into the bottomless battle announcement for Paris

Larina Hillemann is sitting over her books in her Dortmund apartment. Buffalo for the master’s thesis. In February she wants to hand in her thesis and tick the box behind her studies in business psychology. Rowing has currently moved into the second tier for the power woman of the Lübeck RG. The last competition was almost seven months ago. And yet he is still as present as if the race had been 230 strokes of the oar yesterday. Born in Reinbeck, she wanted to steer her women’s eighth in the Olympic qualification to the Games in Tokyo on the Lucerne Rotsee. But after only six minutes, 22 seconds and 52 hundredths of a second, her dream was over. Despite the race to catch up on the second 1000 meters, it was only enough for the ungrateful third place, missing more than seven seconds in the end.

Olympia-off – a low blow

A low blow after all the hardships. Helmswoman Hillemann had prepared herself with 13 other rowers at the Olympic base in Potsdam, which was specially formed a good three years ago. In order to swim laps on the Havel with her girls, past the New Palace or the Glienicker Bridge, she commuted between Potsdam and Dortmund, between training and study locations. A balancing act that pushed her to the limit. But the new coach, the Australian Tom Morris, had also motivated her to get the previously disused eighth back on track. 2020 even to EM silver – with Hillemann on the ropes. But it wasn’t enough for the Olympics. A low blow.

Goal away, coach away – women’s figure eight on the ground

After that, however, the Riemerinnen really fell into the abyss. First, the only remaining highlight, the World Cup in Shanghai, was canceled, then the base was relocated to Berlin and then the coach said goodbye. “In a not so cool way,” as Hillemann explains. Morris was off home. Wordless. Greetings. “We haven’t heard from him again.” The eight crew continued to train for six weeks, “just like that”. Without a goal, without a trainer. “That was extremely tough and difficult for me too,” admits Hillemann. Because she is something like the front woman in the eighth. Motivator, driver, now and then also a psychologist. The 25 year old had the for better marketing “Frauen Riemen Deutschland GbR”, who brought it to the start, is the managing director. With “Row to Tokyo” even an Olympic campaign was initiated. Everything for the cat?

Hillemann im Team Lübeck 2021

No. Hillemann continued, suddenly was in demand and challenged in new areas. “I trained my team from the motorboat, wrote training plans, and organized everything.” To paraphrase Udo Lindenberg: “Someone has to do the job.” All for one goal: “We want to go to the Olympic Games in Paris as a team , especially now, ”says Hillemann, who is also part of the“ Team Lübeck ”promotional squad. “The team helps me financially.”

Hillemann: “2022 will be my decision-making year”

But that alone is not enough. Joining the armed forces and being appointed as a sports soldier now gives her financial security. But the new project “Row to Paris” is not yet available. The association does not want to decide until spring whether to form a women’s eight for the Olympics. “In order to have a chance at the 2023 World Cup, the first Olympic qualification, we have to be at the start in 2022,” says Hillemann. If the thumbs up, the petite power woman wants to go further. Also as a GbR boss. “Paris is a goal we can all unite behind.” If the thumb goes down, the Olympic dream is finally over. Then Hillemann wants to focus on the job. She knows: “2022 will be my decision-making year.”
