Fortnite has switched to Unreal Engine 5 – do you notice a difference?

Thanks to the new 3rd chapter, Fortnite has switched to the new Unreal Engine 5. Now the question arises whether you notice a real difference and if so which one. We’ll show you what Epic has spruced up in the Battle Royal Shooter.

What is the Unreal Engine? In game development, engine means a program that is responsible for the internal processes in the game. The correct generation of the map, the exact reproduction of the inserted sound and keeping the game running while in use are one of the tasks that such a developer program has to pursue.

The Unreal Engine is about the developer program from Epic Games. It was already announced that future games will be equipped with the 5th generation of the engine. Epic went one step further and optimized Fortnite after the Chapter 3 release with the new Unreal engine.

We will show you whether new fetaures can be discovered:

Fortnite and Unreal Engine 5 – do you notice any differences to the old engine?

To make the differences clear to you, we have included a YouTube video from S bench one, which performs a graphic comparison before and after Chapter 3.

After the update to 7:00 p.m., you didn’t really see many changes at first glance. Many players hoped, as in the UE5 presentations by Epic, that all objects on the map would be broken down into every molecule when bombarded or subjected to force. Unfortunately this is not so. We therefore list all visible changes that we have been able to spot so far:

  • The sky looks more natural and abstract, just like in nature
  • Large trees can be cut down and tree trunks roll away
  • Winds are visible and pull past you
  • Snow on the ground shines and reflects reflections
  • Coming natural disasters appear natural and powerful
  • The flowing water looks a little more natural
  • Burned soil forms real soot and looks more realistic
  • Better shadows from players

What do the players say? Opinions are divided. Many players are disappointed that not everything has been changed. Fortnite was expected to be completely spruced up, but many were disappointed. Players comment with opinions like:

I didn’t expect this stuff to look particularly good, especially on a mid-range console like a PS4. But I literally didn’t notice any difference and that shocked me. […] Yes, admittedly, the Tornado looked like a lot to a console, and it was breathtaking to see it work so smoothly. Besides, I could swear that Chapter 2 still looks a lot like it.

It becomes clear that many players do not understand how an engine works. These programs bring changes, but are not only there for graphic polishing. With the implementation of the 5th generation, Epic has created a way to bring better and, above all, more influential updates in the future.

Are there any other changes? So far, the teased storms and tornadoes have been a long time coming, but such new natural conditions will await you in upcoming updates. These will tear down and destroy buildings, take vehicles and objects with them and you can ride them too.

What do you think of the new engine? Do you think there should have been more? Let us know what you think of it in the comments!
