LoL: Twitch-Streamer describes his life as a lonely grind-hell – wonders what everyone has

Twitch streamer Tyler “Tyler1” Steinkamp gave a big interview to a US newspaper. The journalist sums up the everyday life of the streamer as a life that is characterized by hours of playing League of Legends, anger, anger and isolation. The streamer wonders about the article: It sounds like he’s lonely. He wanted it that way – he just didn’t need any friends.

This is the situation:

  • Tyler1 is by far the biggest League of Legends streamer. Every week he is on the air for about 50 hours and plays the MOBA. He poses extreme himself difficult challenges in LoL and has worked for months to meet them.
  • An article in the Washington Post now reported on Tyler1: The report describes the life of the streamer in such a way that he only lives in isolation with his girlfriend and family in a small village, and his life revolves around LoL, the gym and little more. Topics of the article are “loneliness”, “anger” and the feeling of being under constant surveillance. Tyler1 suffered from insufficient sleep, an obsessive-compulsive disorder and regularly swallowed Adderall.
  • Tyler1 now comments on the article and wonders what people are up to. That is the life he wants.

“Just had a bad day”

That’s Tyler1’s reaction: The Twitch streamer says he was really amazed at the reaction to the article. The reporter was with him one day and Tyler1 practically just smiled the whole time and everything was great. But the article then became a “pity number”.

When the report came out, Tyler1 had received hundreds of messages asking him if he was okay. He couldn’t understand it because he didn’t know the article before it appeared.

He then goes through the article live on the Twitch stream:

  • About a passage in the article that he seemed “depressed”, Tyler1 says, for example, that on the day of 11 LoL matches he lost 10 and was simply unlucky. That’s just the way it is sometimes. He just had a bad day.
  • Regarding the comment that he suffered from too little sleep, Tyler1 points out that he has now been diagnosed with sleep apnea and is looking forward to the treatment.
  • Tyler1 expressly criticizes the formulation that he “dropped” from college, it sounds as if he had dropped out because of bad grades. But he had good grades and made a conscious decision to withdraw from the university in order to pursue “other interests”.
  • He is also annoyed by a passage that says there are “umpteen bottles of Adderall” on his bedside table. That sounds like he’s whistling into things like tic tacs – it’s not like that. He suffered from an attention disorder and was taking medication against it.
  • Statements that the house “came down” or “rubbish” was lying around everywhere bother Tyler1 a little. The house was “not sooo worn down”, but only about old. Most of the garbage was fan mail.

“I don’t want any friends in real life”

This is what he says about his loneliness: Tyler1 is annoyed by the statement that nobody visits him in the apartment except for his friends and family. That’s right, but it sounds like he’s longing for company. But that is not the case at all.

Tyler1 says he has no interest in friends in real life. He could move to Alaska with his wife, cat and family and it would be okay with him.

According to Tyler1, the journalist could have written exactly the opposite article from his report. So he posed for hours for photos where he grinned thickly and made triumphant gestures. The photographer then decided on a photo that made him look thoughtful and sad.

Tyler1 consequently decrees to be rich

What else do you notice? Tyler1 consistently contradicts every statement that he would earn anywhere near as much as described in the article. There is talk of him

  • Earned $ 200,000 a month
  • Made $ 5 million in the past few years
  • he owns a sports car for $ 170,000
  • his manager declines any offer for sale under $ 20,000

Tyler1 denies all of this, rolling his eyes and calling it “fake news” and assures his chat that he actually makes hardly any money. The car was only rented.

At the statement in the article that his girlfriend earns $ 200,000 a year, Tyler1 squeals and says: “You deserve the bread! Why do I still stream at all? “

The allegedly low salary of Tyler1 seems to be just as credible as the statement that he is two meters tall. According to a Twitch leak, Tyler1 is actually one of the top earners on Twitch.

Even if Tyler is completely in his role as a fictional character when it comes to “money”, the Twitch streamer gets enraged at one point.

When it comes to how much his life is shaped by the Twitch chat, Tyler1 shows himself as pissed off, as described in the article.

He gets upset about how relentless his chat can be at times. There are people who demand a “24 hour marathon” stream as compensation, just because Tyler1 once canceled one or two streams due to an illness. He then rebukes the chat – apparently some of them have no control over their lives.

“Get a job” comment

Here’s how he reacts to the comments: Below the article are some comments from Washington Post readers.

One comment said Tyler1 should finally grow up and get a job.

The streamer can only smile about it. He calls the writer of the comment a “boomer”, someone who has fallen out of time and is no longer up to date, and offers to meet up.

Obsessive-compulsive disorder just keeps getting worse

This is behind it: What looks like everyday life and “normal life” to Tyler1 certainly looks to an outsider like a life that is characterized by constant repetition, anger and isolation. It seems difficult for many to imagine that Tyler1 really chose this life, but he assures us that it is the same.

Tyler1 completely rejects the idea that he could be lonely. He simply says that he has absolutely no interest in things like “friends”.

In some places the picture wobbles a bit:

  • When Tyler1 talks about the fact that his control disorder has been getting worse since he’s been streaming and he can’t even cope if something about his equipment or his position feels minimally “wrong”.
  • A passage in the article that many acquaintances of Tyler1’s friends had burnout and had to stop streaming, Tyler1 only comments with “That is true.”
  • The fact that his girlfriend actually wants a completely different life and talks in the article about the fact that she misses contact with other people seems to be a sore point. She also wants to get married and has 3 to 5 children – Tyler1 only comments with “Is noted.”

It seems as if not everything is so great in the self-chosen gamer’s paradise. You can understand why people asked after the article whether everything is still okay with Tyler1.

In fact, one great LoL player had to retire because of an OCD that Tyler1 describes:
