LoL: Team gives old man (25) a record contract – Sorts it out a year later
In League of Legends, the Liquid team eliminated its longtime midlaner Nicolaj “Jensen” Jensen. In 2020, as a 25-year-old, he was signed for another 3 years. Allegedly he was supposed to receive $ 4.2 million. But in 2021 the fun will be over. He will be exchanged for the only, even better midlaner in the USA who did not want to remain in retirement.
What kind of deal was that?
- In 2020, Team Liquid gave its midlaner Jensen a 3-year contract. Rumor has it he received $ 4.2 million. That should have been a record contract back then (via. reuters). Jensen was 25 years old.
- That was unusual, because LoL professionals rarely play longer than their mid-twenties. But the Dane Jensen was twice champion with Team Liquid in 2019 and was considered one of the best midlaners in the USA.
- In 2021, however, things didn’t go so well for Team Liquid. The team only came in a disappointing fifth place. Now Jensen has been released from his contract. He’s a free agent.

Why does Jensen have to go? It is absurd. Jensen will be replaced by the only Midlaner who has an even bigger name than him in the USA: Bjergsen (25), his Danish compatriot. Just as strong as the two are only two German midlaners who play as legionnaires in the LCS. But neither of them are that popular.
Bjergsen actually retired in 2020 after a terrible world and continued to work as a coach, but that was apparently not enough for him. He has announced his return as a player, but is not staying with TSM, where he was 8 years, but is switching to Team Liquid.

Why is Bjergsen switching to Team Liquid of all people?
Team Liquid has now put together a kind of “super team” and swaps players in 3 positions. The team now has no US player at all, instead 4 Europeans and a South Korean. However, players like Bjergsen formally count as “US players” because they have been in the US for so long and no longer fall under the “foreign player” limit.
Team Liquid is now a kind of “super team” with Bwipo on the top lane, Bjergsen in the middle and Hans sama / CoreJJ on the botlane. The Dane Santorin will play in the jungle.
They are all experienced players and big names – apparently there was simply no more room for Jensen on the team.
Jensen is now available for a free transfer – but teams have completed planning
What does Jensen say? He has already seen it coming that there is no place for him in the new team and said a month ago that he could not find a team in 2022.
Apparently, Team Liquid originally wanted to get a high transfer fee for him, but couldn’t find anyone who wanted to pay it, and has now made him a free agent.
As Jensen says, he no longer has a transfer fee, but can switch to a new club free of charge.
It is unclear what happened to his lavish contract, which would have run for another 2 years. One possibility would be that he cashed out.
For Jensen it will now be difficult to find a new team, because the squad planning for 2022 has been completed for most of the teams. Even at the age of 26, Jensen is apparently not yet thinking of quitting. But hey, Faker is still playing at the age of 25.
