Destiny 2 nerfts important Warlock Ulti and thus makes whole teams weaker in the endgame

Anyone playing a Well Warlock in Destiny 2 had the shortest super cooldown in the game after the last update. But Bungie forgot to mention that the Super also got a nerf that makes your entire team weaker in the endgame.

Especially in the endgame of Destiny 2, certain Supers that optimize damage in DPS phases are often indispensable. This also includes the “Fountain of Shine”, the Warlock’s Solar Ulti. So far he has always been able to provide more DPS and heal the team.

  • The sword has a healing aura that heals and empowers nearby allies.
  • Well of Shine increased each team member’s weapon damage by approximately 25 percent.
  • Team members standing in the well could shoot through enemy shields.

After the last update 3.4.0. The Well Warlock was even the only level 5 Super, i.e. the one with the fastest regeneration. Healers were initially very satisfied with this. But players like m4eix did now aware of it on reddit and twitterthat this has not only resulted in positive changes and that the support ulti has actually become much worse due to an apparent nerf.

What has changed in the “Fountain of Shine”? Well of Shine no longer amplifies damage to the entire team. The additional DPS output only affects the player who used the Super. The warlock becomes, so to speak, an egoist with regard to his support ulti. The seasonal mod “Focus Lens” no longer increases the damage additionally.

The change also means that team members standing in the well can no longer shoot through enemy shields.

This is clearly noticeable in the endgame: Players quickly realized that it now takes a lot more weapon damage than before to kill a boss in the endgame. This also means that the teams have to fundamentally rethink their previous strategies, in which the use of the “fountain of shine” was essential.

Was that what Bungie wanted? Since the change was not mentioned in the patch notes, the community was initially puzzled and hoped that it might be a bug and that it was not intended. But unfortunately that was not the case.

Why didn’t the developer mention this in the patch notes? After the players pointed this out on reddit, Bungies Sandbox Discipline Lead Kevin Janes immediately reached out and apologized. This important information was simply forgotten due to the large number of changes for update 3.4.0.

This is not a bug or a stealth nerf. I really overlooked it in the patch notes and it’s by design. The goal was to make it so that the Well Warlock still had its uses, but the team that did [die Vorteile bisher] mistakenly got that no longer receives. This led to DPS accelerations that we hadn’t intended or could usefully maintain from season to season. […] We often consider this community to be one that we expect to detect damage outages even with the smallest of changes to the sandbox. So we never expect or believe that we could sneak the slightest change past all of you.

Kevin Janes also responded to the weakening with the Season 15 Mod “Focus Lens”, which previously ensured that the players’ light abilities inflict additional damage on opponents who are affected by stasis.

The interaction for the focus lens should continue to work as normal on other damage-focused Supers.

The Nerf is not understandable for the community

Despite the explanation and apology, the community is not enthusiastic about the change and has a few comments. For many teams in Destiny 2, the “fountain of shine” is an integral part of the endgame and almost loses one of its strongest team advantages due to the Nerf.

Bronsmember brings in the reddit thread the displeasure of the community in a nutshell:

Bungie wants people to build crafting and stats into certain things. But what’s the point when things like the bubble and the fountain don’t stack or particle breakdown literally doesn’t work together at all? It’s like they’re missing out on the most important part of MMO games which is buffs, debuffs, and stacking damage etc. Build crafting isn’t just oh I have more discipline so I can get my grenade faster. It matters what your team benefits from.

Barrier shields are now harder to crack: For many players, the Fountain of Shine was also a good option for getting barrier champions out of the way. Many players find it incomprehensible that this is no longer possible. They think such a change would only make sense if Bungie removed the servitor’s shields as well.

StarsRaven commented on this in the reddit thread and thinks:

I appreciate the openness, but this change is utter nonsense. Anti-barrier servitors, the enemies through walls and around corners [immunisieren] Making invincible is a shitty mechanic, and warlock wells ate their way through these was the way the community worked around that shitty “mechanic”.

The nerf of the “Well of Shine” in Update 3.4.0 shows once again how much Bungie is concerned with making gunplay in Destiny 2 more important. The players now have to come up with new strategies that are still effective in the endgame and compensate for the weakening. For Warlocks, the question will also arise in the future whether the fountain is still worthwhile as a support super.

What do you think? Have you already noticed the change to the “Fountain of Shine”? Or is the Nerf no problem at all for your fireteam because you can do enough damage to every boss without the Warlock and his support?
