Hellblade 2: What does the brutal giant have to do with Senua’s past?

The giant may have more to do with Senua’s first adventure than it seems at first glance.

Spoilerwarnung: This article contains spoilers from the end of Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice.

At the Game Awards new video material for Hellblade 2 was shown and there was – yes, what actually – to see? The question is more complex than it seems. At first glance, we’re presented with Senua’s desperate battle against a giant, but maybe there’s more to it than that. We’ll summarize for you what the new trailer could mean in relation to Part 1, share our theories and explain how the two could be related.

The Hellblade 2 trailer as a reference to “Senua’s Inner Journey”

We remember: Hellblade 1 takes us into the reality of a heroine with mental illness. What can be seen on the surface is a mythological adventure with the aim of finding Hela, the goddess of the underworld and to bring her to raise Senua’s lover Dillion from the dead.

In fact, it’s more about the heroine’s inner journey, her struggle with fears and trauma, and about acceptance. In the end, the heroine acknowledges her mental illness – and also that it cannot be defeated. At the same time she has to accept the inevitability of death, because Senua cannot win the fight against Hela. Even more: Hela seems completely unaffected by the efforts and emotions of the heroine.

Hela and the giant – two sides of the same coin?

The first part of Hellblade never explicitly tells us what is real and what only exists in or is part of Senua’s mind. At the end we see how Hela throws Dillion’s skull into the depths, the camera follows him and then shows Senua, who has taken Hela’s place. Most fans assume that the goddess represents Senua’s fear of death.

If we stay with Hela and compare her appearance with the giant in the trailer for Hellblade 2, a certain similarity is noticeable: Both are pale, bald and have battered bodies. All of this begs the question of who or what the heroine is really dealing with in the new trailer.

The giant as a symbol of Senua’s feelings of guilt

It is possible that the giant – just like Hela – embodies another feeling that Senua has to face. But there is a big difference: The heroine is not alone this time, but leads a crowd of armed followers. Does this contradict the theory that the giant only exists in Senua’s reality?

Not necessarily, because as in the first part, we can’t be sure whether Senua’s allies are really present at this moment, or whether it is a memory that Senua mixes with her version of the present. In the trailer it says:

So it could be that the monster is the guilt Senua feels for leading her followers into a deadly fight. However, this is only one of many possibilities. A specific person could also be behind the giant, for example Senua’s father, who caused her a lot of suffering and presumably also betrayed other people. Whoever the giant is – Senua seems to recognize him at the end of the trailer, while we have to be patient.

Senua’s Saga: Hellblade 2 will appear exclusively for Xbox, but the action-adventure has not yet had a release date.
