New MMORPG on Steam dies after just 81 days

With Eden: New Dawn a new MMORPG was released on Steam on September 28th. That put his focus on sandbox content like collecting, crafting and building your own accommodations. But already now, in mid-December 2021, the developers announced that the servers will be switched off.

What kind of game was that? Eden: New Dawn relied on the sandbox aspect and was visually reminiscent of Minecraft. The game world consisted of different blocks that could be dismantled and then used for your own houses.

The MMORPG dispensed with classes and instead relied on different weapons and matching skills. Sword + shield and a kind of magical glove can be seen in the trailer. In addition, the game relied on different types of opponents and crazy means of locomotion such as rockets, which at least do not exist in classic Minecraft.

The MMORPG has been developed in a custom engine since at least 2019. In summer 2020, the development was switched to the Unreal Engine 4.

The game world is also based on the mobile game: Eden World Builder, which is even more reminiscent of Minecraft, but does not offer multiplayer.

What happened to Eden: New Dawn? On September 28th – the same day as New World – the MMORPG celebrated its release on Steam. If you wanted to play it, you had to pay directly in advance because it was based on a Buy2Play model.

But there was no great hype. Almost three months later, the developers announced the end.

6 players in the peak are not enough to refinance the server

How successful was Eden: New Dawn? On Steam, the new MMORPG came to 6 simultaneous players in Peak (via SteamDB). That was the case on release day itself.

But since the release there have been days when not a single person was online at all.

The game received a total of 4 reviews on Steam, 3 of which advised against buying it. The only positive rating came from a person who recommended after 2 hours of play to wait for major updates and a fix for the server problems, as there are currently many problems and there is not much to do yet (via Steam).

What do the developers say about the end? In an official statement, the developers stated that financial problems were the reason for the end:

Due to financial difficulties, we are unable to continue the development of Eden: New Dawn. Also, we can’t afford to keep the servers running. We sincerely apologize for not being able to achieve the full potential of this game, but there is nothing we can do due to lack of demand and circumstances beyond our control.

Refunds are available through the normal Steam Refund Policy. We thank you for your continued support from Eden and Kingly Games.

However, since very few players have heard of this MMORPG at all and almost no one has played it, the shutdown of the servers should not have any major effects.
