There’s a whole load of new details about Horizon Forbidden West. Among other things, we now know which skill trees are available to us and how the upgrade system works. The information comes from the next big cover story by Gameinformer and were on Reddit divided. We have summarized everything important for you in this article.

This is how the skill trees work in Horizon Forbidden West

In Horizon Forbidden West you have six different play styles at your disposal, each with its own skill tree, each containing 20 to 30 skills. And that’s not all, some of these skills can in turn be improved multiple times to increase their impact or efficiency. Each talent tree also has a special move.

There are these skill trees:

  • Krieger: Mainly uses melee attacks
  • Hunter: Skilled with ranged weapons
  • Intruder: Makes Aloy sneak better and take out enemies quietly
  • Trapper: Those who like to set traps should invest in this tree
  • Survivor: Better restoration of health and efficient resource search
  • Machine master: Hacking machines to make them fight for you or to use them as mounts

Can we level Aloy completely? In Horizon Zero Dawn it was still possible to activate all skills before the level cap. Whether this will also be the case in the successor seems rather unlikely due to the sheer size of the talent trees. At least if we should only get a single skill point when we level up.

We can invest in several skill trees, but whether we can level them all to the top is questionable. Guerrilla Games also wants us to choose a particular style of play. This also indicates that we will not be able to activate all of Aloy’s abilities in one playthrough.

There is also something else new about Horizon Forbidden West

Weapons and armor can be upgraded: Another way you can make Aloy better is with upgrades to her gear. Both weapons and clothing can be upgraded on workbenches. For this, however, you need special machine components, for which you can probably activate hunting missions.

Unlock new weapon abilities: When we upgrade a weapon, it’s not just attack power that increases. The normal bow, which has three levels of improvement, is given as an example. This allows you to carry more arrows with you and unlock other types of arrows with the new acid arrows. It is possible that items no longer have a rarity level or that this at least has different effects than in Zero Dawn.

Improve clothes: If you upgrade a piece of clothing, the resistance to certain elements increases as well as the defense, and the passive skill boost is increased. Each piece of armor can be upgraded three to five times.

Further current news on the topic:

Enemies and Friends: Some smaller details can also be found in the article. For example, Aloy is likely to fight alongside friends and allies much more often. That will probably also be necessary against the new, stronger opponents. There is now a machine that can dig into the ground and attack Aloy from below.

Side missions: Sidequests should play a much bigger role in Forbidden West. When we do such a task, important items beckon that we need for our journey. The so-called “melee pits”, which we find mainly in cities, are a type of sideline activity. These are probably battle arenas where our skills are put to the test.

Horizon Forbidden West appears on February 18 2022 for PS5 and PS4.
