TFT is doing really well in 2022 – boss promises new content for decades

Teamfight Tactics is the Auto Battler for League of Legends. The game was released in 2019 and was enjoying huge popularity especially towards the end of 2021. The lead designer of TFT looked back on the year 2021 in a video and gave interesting outlooks for the future.

Where is TFT now? Teamfight Tactics had to contend with a rather weak Set 4 in early 2021 and later with an equally mediocre Set 5. The mechanics were not well received by many players and chance played a far too big role, even apart from the selection of champions.

That changed with the current set 6, which caused a lot of positive reactions:

  • The set looks more balanced and has less focus on chance
  • The first promo tournament got good audience numbers despite the low prize money
  • The set brought back great streamers William “Scarra” Li and Jeremy “Disguised Toast” Wang
  • In general, TFT was also able to grow on Twitch and in November 2021 cracked the mark of 140,000 simultaneous viewers for the first time since the release in July 2019, even though the 2021 World Cup took place in October (via Sullygnome).

The game has also made significant progress in terms of content. The Hyper Roll was published in early 2021. This is a kind of turbo mode in which matches only last 15 minutes and everything is generally much faster. A little later a special spectator mode for tournaments was implemented.

At the end of the year, the Double Up mode was launched as a beta. There you play in a team of two and can help each other out with champions and items. However, if one player is eliminated, the match ends for both of them.

What does the boss of the game say about TFT? Stephen “Mortdog” Mortimer is TFT’s lead developer and regularly shares matches and future prospects on his YouTube channel.

In his big review of the year, he reveals that TFT has grown in the number of players and developers in 2021 and will also receive content for the next few decades (the relevant part starts at 1:12:10).

TFT is to get a kind of 2.0 version and has firm plans for the next 3 years

What innovations are planned? As Mortdog reveals in the video, the developers are working on a kind of 2.0 version of TFT. This is not supposed to be a new game, but rather a further development of TFT:

I remember that Meddler [Anmerkung: Andrei van Roon, der Vice President von League of Legends] said: “We have to find a TFT 2.0”. I think this year has moved us very strongly in that direction in many ways. There will be some announcements early next year that I think will show what we are talking about.

According to Mortdog, there should already be a concrete plan for the next three years and for a number of new sets. TFT should keep running not just for years, but for decades, even if they could only implement half of their plans.

To do this, the developers have also increased the size of the team:

We have more people. We have a management team, new engineers, new artists, new designers. It feels like we’re going to keep ascending in 2022.

The release of Set 6.5 in February and the release of Set 7 are already planned for 2022. The character Silco from the Arcane series is included in one of these sets. In addition, there will again be a few tournaments per set and a world championship, which already included prize money of $ 250,000 in 2021.

Mortdog also emphasized in his video that he reads the complaints of players who want better balance, bug fixes or a better mobile version every day. He sees a lot of potential to make TFT even better in the years to come.

What do you think of Teamfight Tactics? Have you played it in the last few weeks or did you quit at some point? What do you like and what bothers you about the game? Feel free to write it in the comments.
