Firmware update should bring more eSports to the PS5

During Sony’s keynote at CES 2022, Ryan spoke about future firmware updates for the PS5, revealing a new feature:

This year we plan to introduce a new Tournaments feature.

The background: For several years Sony has been organizing the so-called PlayStation Tournaments (Challenger and Open Series), on which competitive games such as NBA 2K22, Rainbow Six Siege or Mortal Kombat 11 are played. The winners can look forward to cash prizes, but there are also small rewards just for participating.

On the PS4, events, such as the ESL, used to be accessible via the dashboard. Once registered, matches could be started directly from the menu. However, the feature was released in mid-2020 removed with update 8.0.

More current news about the PS5:

Similar to the previous PS4 dashboard feature, the eSports update for the PS5 will make it easy to enter online tournaments. This does not only apply to the game itself, but also to watching. We can also expect a Discord connectionafter Sony invested in voice chat service in 2021.
