Sony finally shows new accessories for the PS5 – this is PS VR 2

During the keynote for CES 2022, Sony officially announced the new PlayStation VR2 system for the PS5. MeinMMO summarizes all important information.

Sony had already presented the PS VR2 controller in advance. Now Sony has also shown the matching hardware and announced an exclusive game.

It’s an interesting development, because almost 2 years ago Sony declared that VR would not be important for gaming in the coming years, but that they still firmly believe in the combination of PlayStation and VR.

What is PS VR anyway? PlayStation VR (PS VR for short) is a virtual reality headset that Sony developed for the PS4. Players who put on the headset can then immerse themselves more deeply in the game world. Because a virtual space is created in the brain that our eyes perceive as realistic. Certain VR games can only be played with such glasses on the PlayStation.

What has now been announced? Sony has now presented PlayStation VR2 (PS VR2 for short) at CES 2022. Sony has completely redesigned the VR system and the new device should be able to take full advantage of the PS5’s hardware. With 3D audio and haptic feedback on the DualSense controller, two important foundations had been laid for immersion in games on the PS5. Immersion means that you can immerse yourself better and deeper in a game.

In addition, Sony has also developed new controllers for PS VR, the PS VR2-Sense controllers. The new VR system offers the potential for higher visual quality, including resolutions up to 4K and support for HDR output.

Sony also stated that PS VR2 will use foveated rendering, which tracks the user’s point of view to dynamically adjust which game elements are rendered with the highest quality. In this way, the performance can be improved, since everything that the player does not see at the moment does not have to be calculated.

What improvements are there? Sony had presented some improvements (via blog.playstation.com):

Visual precision: PS VR2 offers 4K HDR, a 110-degree field of view and a coarser rendering of the peripheral field of view (foveated rendering). The device offers you a resolution of 2000 x 2040 pixels and a frame rate of 90/120 Hz.
Headsetbasiertes Controller-Tracking: With the inside-out tracking function, “PS VR2” tracks players and controllers via cameras that are integrated into the VR headset. Movements and viewing directions are reproduced in the game without the need for an external camera. With PS VR that was still the case and you had to buy an additional camera.
New sensory functions: PS VR2 Sense technology combines eye tracking, headset feedback, 3D audio and the innovative PS VR2 Sense controller to give players a strong sense of immersion. Headset feedback is a new sensory function that increases the perception of actions within the game. Sony would like to use this to transfer some of the functions that we have also known from the DualSense controller to the PS VR2
Eye tracking: With eye tracking, the PS VR2 detects eye movement so that a simple look in a certain direction can generate additional interactions for the character. For example, if you look at a character in the game, the game will perceive it and you will be addressed by the person. This should make conversations seem more natural, for example.

What will PS VR2 cost? A price is not yet known. The previous device, PS VR, costs 399.99 euros to start in 2016 without the PlayStation camera. Sony later lowered the price to 299.99 euros. It is likely that PS VR2 will also cost 300 to 400 euros.

When will PS VR2 be released? Sony had not announced a release date. However, Sony had stated that the device should appear sometime in 2022. The next important release for the PS5 are the colorful sideplates, which should be available from January 2022:

What kind of game is this? Sony had also announced the first game with the new VR system, which you can only play exclusively with PS VR2.

This is “Horizon: Call of the Mountain”, which takes place in the same universe as the previous Horizon games with the protagonist Aloy.

Much is not yet known, here we have to wait for the upcoming “State of Play” from Sony, where more information about the game will probably be presented. Maybe more “PS VR” games will be featured in the future. Many users are still waiting for an MMORPG with VR elements, where Sony had at least secured the naming rights.
