LoL nerts a new dragon twice within 4 weeks – why is it so strong?

The Chemtech Dragon was introduced in League of Legends with the start of Pre-Season 12 in November 2021. The last time he got a hidden nerf was on January 4th. But what exactly is it that makes the kite so strong? We at MeinMMO explain the background to you.

What has happened to the kite so far? With patch 11.23, Pre-Season 12 started on November 17, 2021. In addition to a comeback mechanism and new items, the new features of the season also included two dragons – the Chemtech and Hextech dragons.

While the Hextech kite did reasonably well in its balance, the Chemtech kite had several problems. That’s why Riot brought two nerfs with the last two patches:

  • With patch 11.24 in December, the Dragon Soul buff was weakened. The duration of the resurrection and the damage during it have been reduced. In addition, a new indicator has been placed over the heads of the revived players so that they can be seen more clearly (via LoL).
  • Now another Nerf came with the new patch 12.1 on January 4th. So new plants were brought into play when the Chemtech dragon changes the map.

Developer Matt Leung-Harrison explained on Twitter that these plants are supposed to help the team behind to get vision in their own jungle so as not to lose even more.

Chemtech-Dragon rewards aggressive playstyle, often makes strong teams even stronger

What can the dragon actually do?

  • If you defeat the Chemtech dragon as a team, you get a buff that gives you 6% bonus damage against opponents who currently have more lives than you.
  • The third dragon in the game changes the entire map. With the Chemtech kite, several fog fields appear in the jungle. In these foggy fields, players can hide and also cause up to 10% more damage.
  • The dragon soul, in turn, gives the team that killed the Elder Dragon a special reinforcement: They are revived with 80% of their health after death and can still cause damage for 4 seconds before they finally die. This damage is reduced by 40% and the movement speed is also slower and slower during resurrection.

What are the problems now? All dragons bring buffs that greatly benefit the team that defeats the dragon. But with the Chemtech kite, this factor is significantly reinforced.

On the one hand, the passive effect with the short-term resuscitation is very strong. Players can land a CC or other important skill and help the rest of the team extremely. This exceeds the strengths of the other buffs, where you get additional movement speed, more stats or life point regeneration.

The much bigger problem, however, is changing the map. Because usually only the winning team benefits from the foggy fields. Because they play much more aggressively and penetrate the opposing jungle more often. They can control it much better through the fog fields, since normal wards do not make them visible either. A pink ward or uncovering skills are required.

The Hextech Dragon was too strong when it was released and may still be.

Once a team controls the enemy jungle, the defending team can no longer enter it safely. They usually nail that to their own base and the winning team gets better control over the baron and other dragons. A classic snowball principle.

The defenders, on the other hand, can rarely use the fields for an ambush, because they always run the risk of the enemy suddenly running into their base and ending the game.

A comeback is automatically made more difficult by the influence of the Chemtech dragon on the map.

How do the other dragons change the map?

  • The air dragon creates fields on the map through which characters can move faster. Both sides benefit roughly equally from this.
  • The mountain and fire dragons change the routes, which also affects both sides equally.
  • The Ocean Dragon creates more bushes and thus potentially more ambush options. However, normal wards work here, which is why the influence is not so great.
  • The Hextech Dragon creates teleport fields, through which you can get out of the base faster into the jungle. As a rule, even the defenders benefit more from this than the attackers.

So the Chemtech dragon is the best dragon for an already winning team.

How do you see the changes to the Chemtech kite? Do the plants help as counterplay or does Riot have to work on the dragon’s strengths even further? Feel free to write it in the comments.
