Twitch bans one of its most important streamers ever

It has recently become fashionable on the Twitch streaming platform to watch TV series with fans. This is considered a new “meta”: One of the platform’s most important streamers was banned on Saturday, December 8th, 2022: 25-year-old Imane “Pokimane” Anys. We look at the reasons for the ban and when Pokimane will be back on Twitch.

Who is Pokimane?

New “TV meta” on Twitch is Pokimane’s undoing

What was she banned for? Pokimane watched the 15-year-old Nickelodeon show “Avatar: The Last Airbender” on Twitch stream together with her fans and was apparently banned for it.

It looks like she received a “copyright strike” that automatically paralyzed her channel.

The ban came in the night from Friday to Saturday

That’s the exciting thing about it: It is considered a “new Twitch meta” to simply turn on a TV show in the stream and then react to it. Streamers like xQc or HasanAbi watch the popular program “MasterChef” with Gordon Ramsay.

Other streamers like Ludwig have been warning for a long time that this behavior will lead to warnings from the TV stations fluttering in – as has happened in the music industry. So far, streamers have dismissed this as panic-making and said that there was nothing wrong with watching these TV series. You would somehow use it to advertise the series and contribute to their reach.

But apparently this has its first consequences.

When is Pokimane coming back on Twitch?

How does Pokimane deal with the ban? Pretty loose. All she wrote on Twitter was “The Fire Nation attacked” – a reference to the TV series.

How long is she banned? Pokimane says she has been banned for 48 hours. On Monday afternoon of our time, should a 12 hour “comeback stream” continue?

But the ban could herald the end of the “Twitch TV meta”. Pokimane is considered Twitch’s darling, but Twitch is apparently forced to ban copyright complaints.

Maybe the players will watch games again instead of Gordon Ramsay or old cartoons:
