A popular MOBA died in 2018 – new developer will bring it back to Steam in 2022

Paragon was a MOBA from Epic Games that came out in 2016 and had some interesting ideas. Nevertheless, the game could not prevail and was discontinued in 2018. However, the Korean giant Netmarble is bringing the MOBA back under the name Overprime in 2022. You will even be able to play it on Steam.

What kind of game was Paragon? Paragon was a rather unusual MOBA. It relied on a third-person view like Smite, but with realistic, beautiful graphics and a SciFi setting. The highlight was the dynamic and action-packed fights, which were basically reminiscent of a modern shooter.

However, the MOBA was very complex and not easy for beginners right from the start. In addition, the game was rebuilt several times, which led to some confusion.

Paragon had some hardcore fans who were very attached to the game and even started several petitions to save it. But the game could not reach a large crowd. Because of this, and also because of the great success of Fortnite, Epic discontinued the MOBA in April 2018.

What happens now Epic made all Paragon data publicly available in 2018. Other developers were able to create their own game from the assets and content. The South Korean development team “SoulEVE” started developing such a MOBA in 2019.

The team has now been employed by the Korean gaming company Netmarble. Together they want to bring Overprime to the global market in 2022. In the west, for example, the game appears on Steam, where you can add it to your wishlist (via Steam).

A classic MOBA, but with shooter gameplay

What exactly is overprime? Like Paragon, Overprime will be a MOBA and will basically rely on the gameplay of games like Dota and League of Legends:

  • You choose a hero to start with
  • With this you enter a battlefield in which you fight another team in 5v5
  • The goal is to destroy the opposing base
  • On the way there there are 3 lanes with towers on them

Like Paragon, however, it relies on third-person view and shooter gameplay. However, there have been some graphic adjustments, new bushes to hide and some changes to the heroes. However, Paragon fans should feel right at home in Overprime.

When does the MOBA appear? In their New Year’s greeting, the developers announced Early Access and the full release for the PC for 2022 (via YouTube).

In addition, a port for consoles is being worked on, as can be seen in a short video clip. However, it is unclear when this version will appear.

Overprime isn’t the first Paragon clone

What can I play until Overprime comes out? Anyone who feels like Paragon after the content shown here can already try another clone of the game. One such game, Fault, appeared in Early Access in the summer of 2020 on Steam.

However, this is Buy2Play and costs 8.19 euros. It is difficult to say whether the purchase is worthwhile, as the game currently only has 184 average players. In the last 30 days, the Peak 467 were online at the same time. In the reviews, however, there is criticism that the search for a match should often take 30 minutes or more.

However, the MOBA is still being developed, because the last patches came on December 19th and January 2nd. So if you really want to start playing now, you may find an alternative in Fault.

What do you think of overprime? Does the new MOBA appeal to you? And do you believe in success or will it fail just like Paragon?

Currently, MOBAs are generally having a hard time on the market, apart from the 3 big games LoL, Dota 2 and Smite. In 2022, one of the first games will even be discontinued for good:
