The Great Loot Shooter Crisis – What Happened to Destiny, The Division and Anthem?

The loot shooter genre has long been very popular with MMO players. Games like Destiny and The Division have given gamers hours of fun. But the genre currently seems to be in crisis. We talk about it on the MeinMMO podcast.

This is the topic: Destiny 2 and The Division 2 are in a crisis. Anthem is dead. We thought that loot shooters would usher in a new era in MMOs. So Destiny had just established its MMO mechanics on the consoles at the time.

In the meantime there were a few games that were successful, but were not really mega-hits. Video games like Outriders are part of that. Sub-genres like Battle Royale had a huge charisma – Fortnite in particular was a huge success on Twitch – but this shine is also waning today.

There are popular shooters like Borderlands or Warframe that have their own large fan communities and have been running stable for years. But they do not advance the genre of the loot shooter.

If you look at the big shooters celebrating their release in 2022, you’ll find a lot of great video games there, but no loot shooter:

  • Rainbow: Six Extraction: a tactical shooter
  • Dying Light 2: ein Survival-Horror
  • S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: ein Survival-Horror
  • Redfall: still a bit uncertain, but it’s going in the direction of adventure with co-op
  • Tiny Tinas Wonderland: the only classic loot shooter from Gearbox and an offshoot of Borderlands.

Schuhmann and Leya analyze what happened to the big loot shooters and why they tend to run under the radar today. Because one thing is certain: the genre has many fans among gamers who are still mourning its heyday.

Will there be another wedding among the loot shooters? Find out our assessment in the new podcast episode.
