IP, or Ingress Protection Rating (also known as International Protection Rating), is a standard set by the International Electrotechnical Commission. According to the organization, the codes are designed as a “system for classifying the degree of protection provided to electrical equipment”.

The first number in the rating code indicates the degree of protection provided against the ingress of solid objects, such as fingers or dust. These protection levels range from 0 to 6. The second number indicates the degree of protection against moisture or liquid ingress, with protection levels ranging from 0 to 8.

Sometimes you’ll see an IP rating with a number replaced by an X, such as IPX8. In this example, a company did not provide test details, so the rating number is replaced with an X. An IPX8-rated device can survive being submerged in water, but it is not officially rated for any dust protection.

What is the meaning of IP67 and IP68

Smartphones with IP68 rating can withstand dust and can be submerged in 1.5 meters of water for half an hour. Whereas the IP67 rating means that the device will not get dust inside and the device can be kept in 1 meter deep water for half an hour.
