After hacker attacks in FIFA 22: This is how EA wants to protect your accounts now

In FIFA 22 there were recently incidents in which particularly valuable FUT accounts were taken over by fraudsters who then emptied them. Now EA has expressed itself extensively on the subject.

What happened? Several members of the FIFA community have spoken up in the past few weeks reporting attacks on their accounts.

  • Among other things, there were content creators and streamers, but lesser-known names from the top trader lists – i.e. players with extremely valuable accounts – also registered. Also “NickRunTheFUTMarket”, a well-known trader in FIFA 22, reported only with the message “Hacked, Goodnight” on Twitter. The streamer Trymacs also got it – twice.
  • Apparently someone had logged into the Ultimate Team accounts and cleared them out. Highly rated players and large amounts of coins were sometimes simply wasted.
  • The two-factor authentication sometimes didn’t help either. There was a lot of criticism here of EA’s customer support, where the security precautions were apparently insufficient to completely protect access data.

EA statement on the incidents – measures are intended to improve security

This is what EA says about the incidents: At first EA only responded with a very brief message saying they were investigating the cases. But now there is a more comprehensive statement in the pitch notes for FIFA 22, in which, in addition to an apology, it is also presented which steps should be taken to avoid such incidents in the future.

“In the past few weeks we have been made aware of attempts to take over the accounts of high profile players,” the pitch notes read. The investigations have confirmed that several accounts “have been compromised using phishing techniques,” the statement said.

Fraudsters have used threats and other social engineering methods to exploit human errors within our customer experience team, bypass two-factor authentication, and gain access to other players’ accounts.

According to the current status, “fewer than 50 accounts” have been taken over with this method. The owners are about to be identified in order to restore account access and content. At the same time, the investigations will continue, according to EA.

“The security of accounts is always based on human behavior, and we understand that there is room for improvement,” the statement said. Therefore, 3 measures are now being taken to improve the security of the accounts.

All EA Consultants and people who support EA Account Services will again receive individual training and additional team training. The specific focus is on account security practices and the phishing techniques used in this case.

We will add additional steps to the account ownership verification process, such as mandatory manager approval for any email change requests.

We will be redesigning our customer experience software to better identify suspicious activity, flag threatened accounts and further minimize the potential for human error in the account update process.

These steps could lead to longer waiting times if you turn to the support with corresponding inquiries, but are necessary to ensure the security of the accounts, according to the statement.

What do you think of the statement? Do you consider the steps to be correct or would you have wished for a different solution? Tell us in the comments.

Aside from the hacking incidents, the Ultimate Team is currently also talking about the approaching TOTY event. This year’s Team of the Year in FIFA 22 will be chosen there.
