Major MMORPG Streamer Says “You Can’t Grow on Twitch by Showing Games”

Video games have been taking a backseat to Twitch for a while now. Streamer sodapoppin even goes so far as to say that you can’t grow with them. Other content is more suitable for this.

This is the situation:

  • Actually, Twitch was created as a platform where streamers can show live how they play video games.
  • However, there are now many categories for other activities, such as Just Chatting or the “Hot Tub” streams that emerged in 2021.
  • The streamer sodapoppin now even explains that video games are no longer important on the platform if you want to grow.

Who is the streamer? sodapoppin rose to fame as an MMORPG streamer and still mostly shows World of Warcraft on Twitch to this day. In the top list of the platform, he is currently in 45th place in the follower ranking (via sullygnome.com).

In one of his recent streams, he explained that video games hardly matter to streamers anymore. It was about the release of the new Monster Hunter Rise, which, despite its alleged size, was hardly popular on Twitch. He explains:

“How big is the game on Twitch? To be honest, that doesn’t matter anymore. The Just Chatting section is just so damn big. That’s the only thing that counts on Twitch. You can’t grow as a streamer on Twitch by showing games.”

Anyone who decides to show games is not making a business decision, but a personal one. From a business point of view, it’s not worth playing Monster Hunter. Here you can see the full clip:

TV is the new meta – video games only second

What’s currently happening on Twitch: The Just Chatting section is by far the strongest category on Twitch right now with over 63 million viewer hours. Behind it in 2nd place is Leagie of Legends with just over 44 million (via sullygnome.com).

One of the biggest trends on Twitch right now is showing series live in streams. The Avatar animated series in particular seems to be popular here. There is talk of a new “meta”, i.e. what is currently popular.

However, this is not really allowed, which Twitch also shows with penalties. Even well-known figures like Pokimane, one of the biggest streamers, have already been banned for showing series.

Only a few days after her, the top streamer Disguised Toast got it, who immediately took the opportunity to take a break. He even staged all this, as he claims. While some streamers apparently assume that showing old series is allowed, a former Twitch star warns against it:

Large streamers are watching series on Twitch, but one warns of catastrophic consequences

Twitch prohibits showing content that is not owned by you. The penalties have been enforced more severely since the copyright complaints and DMCA strikes of 2020 and apply not only to music, as previously planned, but also to series.

Twitch is committed to responding when there are complaints. In this case, in the form of bans, which only lasted a few days in the cases of Pokimane and Disguised Toast. However, some streamers are now trying to somehow make a profit from the bans:
