Streamers are giving away trading cards – but keep the greatest treasure

A group of streamers called BackyardBreaks recently opened live football player trading cards and gave them away to viewers. But when they drew a super-rare and correspondingly valuable card, they suddenly wanted nothing more to do with it. It hasn’t gone well for her so far.

How should this work? On the streaming channel BackyardBreaks, among other things, live boxes full of football trading cards are opened and raffled off to viewers. The cards go to spectators who can then keep them.

What exactly is drawn, however, is unknown until unpacking. Such “breaks” are very popular among fans of trading cards.

Then what was the problem? But then the streamers suddenly pulled an extremely rare card. According to a reddit user, it should be a total only 10 copies of this card give. Immediately everyone was over the moon and jumped around the room like crazy. It was immediately clear to them “this card is worth at least 10,000!”

So it’s only fair to give it to the lucky winner. But then one of the streamers threw in, “Actually, that’s not fair, we should actually keep them!”

Streamers don’t want to give out the $25,000 card and cause a lot of trouble

How did the situation continue? Shortly thereafter, it was revealed that the card was worth around $25,000. Then it suddenly became clear that the streamers would rather keep the card.

“Sorry, we can’t give away a $25,000 card!” revealed one of the streamers. He took responsibility for it right away: “People will surely hate me for that!”

Here were the reactions: The action of the streamers was of course not well received. On reddit, YouTube and Twitter, head-shaking reactions from viewers who consider the streamers’ actions to be quite mangy are piling up:

  • “I love how they immediately went from ‘It’s all free’ to ‘This is ours.'”
  • “How can you watch this stream and think these guys would ever give anyone anything worth more than $5?”
  • “Stay tuned for the BackyardBreakers crypto coin in a few weeks.”

In addition, according to various users reddit the raffle wasn’t free at all. Rather, the streamers should charge money for being allowed to participate in the draw:

“Yes, these guys are screwed. It’s not even a giveaway, they charge people money to “slot” for a chance to win a box or card pack.”

How did the streamers react? As pressure from the community mounted, streamers were suddenly willing to donate $20,000 to a good cause. But that didn’t go over well either. Rather, they were then accused of wanting to save taxes in this way (donations can be deducted from taxes). The Twitter video was not taken seriously either. In it, the streamers want to assure that it is much fairer to donate the money from ticket sales to a good cause than to give it to just one person.

Rather, there was harsh criticism of the honesty behind the project. Another viewer even bothered to post a video of his own. In it, he dresses like one of the BeakyardBreakers and loudly announces that he’ll keep his prized card and instead donate $12 worth of fast food to several people. That’s much fairer!

Streamers continue to backtrack and make themselves even less popular: After the campaign with the donation probably didn’t have the desired effect, the streamers released one again Tweet with another announcement. The card will now be handed over. But not to the original winner, but to a randomly selected follower on Twitch.

Apparently that didn’t go over well either, and one wonders why they don’t just give it to the person who originally got the draw. According to the streamers, that would never have been the case, because according to their statement, they never intended to raffle off this special pack of cards.

All in all, the situation for BackyardBreak seems to get worse with every attempt at justification. So it remains to be seen if the guys are actually giving away the $25,000 card or if they can think of other reasons not to do exactly that.
