The Xbox Series X was released on November 10, 2020 and the PS5 followed on November 19, 2020. Both next-gen consoles offer significantly improved performance over the previous generation around the PS4 and Xbox One.

In order to be able to use the resulting possibilities, many people think about a new television. The market is full of 4K TVs, but not all models offer the features you want and need in a 4K gaming TV.

Therefore, in this buying guide, we only show you 4K televisions that meet all the requirements for the PS5 and Xbox Series X. Accordingly, these topics await you:

  • What is even important for a 4K gaming TV?
  • Why you should pay attention to HDMI 2.1 for PS5 and Xbox Series X
  • The best 4K gaming TVs from LG
  • The best 4K gaming TVs from Sony
  • The best 4K gaming TVs from Samsung

What features are important for 4K gaming TVs?

This is important for gaming 4K TVs: If you want to buy a 4K television to play with, you should pay attention to a few features. Above all, it should have a low input lag of less than 20-25 ms. This is usually made possible with the help of a special gaming mode.

You can see even more details in the games if the 4K TV uses very good HDR. It is best to use current standards such as HDR10+ or HDR10 Pro. It would be particularly good if the TV also had Dolby Vision. This is also an HDR technique, but offers the advantage over normal HDR that the metadata can be stored for each scene and each frame. This results in an even better picture.

It is also recommended to pay attention to the peak brightness of the television. The 4K television should have a value of at least 600 cd/m². Something in the range of 700 to 800 cd/m² would be very good.

It is also an advantage if the television has FreeSync or G-Sync. These two properties are especially important if you want to connect your gaming PC to the TV.

Small checklist of important 4K gaming characteristics:

  • Low input lag (less than 25ms, possibly via game mode)
  • HDR10+
  • High peak brightness (from 600 cd/m²)
  • For PS5 & Xbox Series X: HDMI 2.1 with VRR and ALLM
  • Advantage: FreeSync or G-Sync (especially when using TV with a PC)

OLED or LED? This is important

Important for a top television: If you also like to watch films or series in 4K on the television, you should of course also pay attention to the picture quality. The OLED Display offers the best color and black values and the best overall viewing experience.

There is no longer any real risk of burn-in with OLEDs. Especially through appropriate protective mechanisms. In certain cases, the image is shifted by a few pixels in order to keep changing the position of bright elements minimally. In addition, the screen saver protects against the risk of burn-in.

What exactly is burn-in? Especially at the beginning of OLED TVs, there was the problem that static images such as the logo of a TV station could “burn” into the image. It’s not really burn-in, but uneven aging of the individual pixels. The luminosity of OLED pixels decreases over time. Static images simply ensure that the pixels in these areas age faster, making it visible to the viewer.

With today’s OLEDs, however, this happens extremely rarely in private use. You would have to have the TV running on the same channel for several months to have such an effect. According to a long-term test by RTINGS.com however, even after over 5,000 hours, there is no deterioration in luminosity or any “burn-ins”.

LED-TVs are LCD TVs with LED backlighting. Although they do not display black as well as an OLED, they achieve a significantly higher peak brightness and still offer saturated colors and a strong contrast. Ultimately, it’s a question of price. OLEDs usually cost a few hundred euros more than LED TVs.

For the best possible gaming and TV experience, we recommend the OLED TVs. Otherwise, the QLEDs from Samsung and Full Array LEDs are recommended.

That’s why you want HDMI 2.1 for PS5 & Xbox Series X

Maximum performance of the next-gen consoles: HDMI 2.1 is the most important feature for a 4K TV if you want to take full advantage of the PS5 and Xbox Series X.

Only with HDMI 2.1 is it possible to play games in 4K and 120 FPS on a TV. With older standards, the limit is 60 FPS. However, the new consoles allow more than 60 FPS depending on the game and so you can only experience this with HDMI 2.1.

With HDMI 2.1 you also get the following important features: Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) and Auto Low Latency Mode (ALLM). VRR is comparable to FreeSync and G-Sync. It enables a variable refresh rate, which prevents frame tearing (i.e. streaking of the images).

ALLM automatically switches to the lowest latency mode. This will give you the best input lag without having to do anything extra.

Of course, you can also connect the gaming PC to your 4K TV. Image source: LG.com
