Suunto 5 Peak: the new Suunto watch has GPS and is focused on the most athletic users

After the launch of Suunto 9 Peak At the beginning of last year, Suunto, the company specializing in sports watches, has just introduced a little brother. We talk about Suunto 5 Peak, a smart watch that, although it is true that it does not have the same smart capabilities as other more popular devices, is almost entirely oriented towards more athletic users.

We will get to know it better later, but not before commenting that the watch can be reserved from January 20 on the company’s website and from February 1 in other retailers in Spain. Its price will be 299 euros. With that said, let’s see what the watch has to offer.

Following in the footsteps of the Suunto 9 Peak, the Suunto 5 Peak maintains a minimalist, simple design with good construction materials. The bezel is made of stainless steel, the lens of polyamide and the box made of fiberglass reinforced with polyamide. This box has a size of 43 millimeters and a thickness of 12.9 millimeters. The strap, meanwhile, is 22-millimeter silicone and 130-210 mm long.

In the box we have five buttons that we will use to interact with the watch, because even though we are used to smart watches having a touch screen, the Suunto 5 Peak does not. This mounts a 1.1-inch LED panel with 218 x 218 pixels of resolution which, at least on paper, should suffice.

Suunto5

Suunto has not revealed the battery capacity of the watch, but claims that it lasts up to ten days in time mode (giving the time, go). If we turn on 24/7 metric logging and notifications, autonomy will drop to seven days. If we use GPS in training, depending on the mode we will have between 20 and 100 hours of autonomy. The integrated GPS chip is compatible with the main satellite constellations.

Among the functions integrated in the operating system we have FusedSpeed (combines GPS and acceleration sensor to better measure speed), FusedTrack (combines GPS and motion sensors for exercise tracking when battery is low), Snap to Route (adjust the path to the activity we are going to do) and Ghost Runner (set a desired pace and compare our distance to a “ghost runner”).

Suunto4

Something interesting and also striking is the turn by turn navigation via GPS. This is particularly useful when we make routes, since it will allow us to continue the path without having to look at the map and receive the instructions from the clock. The problem is that there are no maps integrated into the smartwatch.

When it comes to sports, he has more than 80 profiles, water resistance, automatic seven-day training plan… All of this customizable, as is normal in the company’s watches.
