The Internet connection with Starlink in Rural Spain works at fiber speeds

Elon Musk’s internet connection has already started to work in Spain and the first users who have dared to hire Starlink services are more than happy.

Giving internet through a satellite connection sounds like a science fiction movie from the 80s. And surely that was the inspiration for Elon Musk when he founded Starlink, his satellite internet company that wants to bring the network to the whole world.

Despite its problems, its very high initial cost (you have to buy the equipment and the antenna and it is about 500 euros) and that they still have to deploy a few thousand satellites to provide a stable and continuous service, Starlink is a reality in Spain .

As we have seen, in our country there are people working with this connection, after years of suffering the abandonment of traditional telecoms, which have never been interested in bringing high-speed internet to rural areas.

In the web Broadband a user has exposed his case, after spending years using a 4G connection of just 10 Mb/s. This customer did the reservation of the Starlink beta in June 2021, paying the corresponding 99 euros, and in early January he paid 499 euros for the welcome kit.

That is: router and antenna. Once received, He placed the antenna on the roof of his house, high up so that nothing would cause interference and, furthermore, he would have free access to the sky (where the Starlink satellites are located) as advised by the American company.

Once everything was installed and connected correctly, the user tried speed tests through the complete Starlink application. The numbers that the tests showed are encouraging: 339 Mb/s download and 59 Mb/s upload.

As for latency, the graph shows minimums of 19 ms, although with enough jitter when marking maximums of 70 ms, so it can be ensured that the stability of the network is still far from terrestrial solutions, although in terms of speed we are talking about current fiber optics.

In this way, Starlink is postulated as a great solution for the thousands of people in Spain who do not have a good internet connection because they live far from a large city. Although it has the danger that your satellite on duty will leave you without internet because of rushing into the atmosphere.

Or so we have been able to learn thanks to the tweets of the Fireballs and Meteorites Research Network, which observe all the objects that enter the atmosphere in our country. Luckily there was no damage nor did it affect the internet connection, since it was only a satellite.
