LoL pro resigned in 2020 after disaster at Worlds – now dominates the American league

The player Soren “Bjergsen” Bjerg (25) ended his career in League of Legends in 2020. Back then, his American team was knocked out with 0 wins and 6 losses at the Worlds. In 2022 he returned to the American LCS and took off immediately.

This is the situation:

  • Bjergsen was one of the best known and most popular midlaners in the West. He played for the Copenhagen Wolves in Europe from early 2012 to late 2013, but was then brought to the US by Team SoloMid.
  • There he won several championships and was even voted MVP four times.
  • In 2020, however, the Worlds ended in disaster. TSM flew out of the tournament without a win and with 6 losses. Following this, Bjergsen ended his career but became a coach for TSM.
  • After a season as a coach, which was also only mediocre, he left TSM.
  • He has been part of direct competitor Team Liquid since the end of 2021. And things are going really well for Bjergsen.

Bjergsen advances to the semifinals of the first tournament, has the second highest KDA in the league

How is Bjergsen doing? Ahead of the 2022 season, some fans were skeptical that Bjergsen could actually still perform adequately. But in the currently running Lock Ins, a tournament of the LCS, the midlaner convinces directly.

The quarter-finals were played at the weekend and Team Liquid was able to prevail against its competitor FlyQuest and make it through to the semi-finals. A big part of that was Bjergesen, who even has the best KDA of the whole tournament.

  • With 18 kills, 41 assists and just 3 deaths in 6 games, he has a 19.7 KDA. Only his teammate Eyla has a KDA of 26, although he was only involved in 3 of 6 games (via Oracle’s Elixir).
  • Bjergsen also has the fewest deaths of any player who played more than 3 games in the tournament. Only his teammates Eyla (1 death in 3 games) and Yeon (0 deaths in one game) have fewer.
  • He also has the fifth most creep kills per minute.

“Lock In” tournament to make American teams more competitive

What kind of tournament is this anyway? The American league LCS has been opening its season with the “Lock In” tournament since 2021. The teams are supposed to duel really intensively there before the regular spring season begins.

The organizers hope that this tournament will make America more competitive and stronger internationally. Because since Season 1, only one American team has managed to reach the semifinals of a World Cup – Cloud 9 in 2018.

For comparison, the last years of the European teams:

  • In 2018 they placed 2nd (Fnatic) and 3/4th (G2 Esports)
  • In 2019, G2 Esports reached #2
  • In 2020, G2 Esports reached place 3/4
  • In 2021 no team from Europe made it into the top 4

How is the tournament going? Next weekend, the teams Evil Geniuses and Cloud9, as well as Diginitas and Team Liqiud will meet in the semi-finals. As the tournament has gone so far, Team Liquid and Bjergsen are the favorites in this match, having beaten Dignitas in the preliminary round.

The grand finale of the tournament will also take place on Sunday.

The big disappointment of the “Lock In” tournament so far has been TSM, who were eliminated in last place in Group A with one win and three losses.
