CoD on PS4/PS5? Xbox exclusivity from 2024 could come according to the report

Three CoD games for Playstation, then maybe it’s over.

Will Call of Duty continue to come out on PS4 and PS5 in the future? Many fans have been asking this question since it became known that Microsoft will take over Activision-Blizzard for almost 70 billion dollars over the course of the coming year. Microsoft has already signaled its willingness to continue releasing the franchise for Playstation for the time being, and Sony spoke of existing contracts that should guarantee this. But what period are we talking about here?

A report by Jason Schreier at Bloomberg (Paywall) sheds some light on the nebulous statements of the console operators. Specifically, Activision Sony is said to have promised three CoD games before the deal with Microsoft was completed. When these are released, however, the Playstation exodus from Call of Duty threatens.

These 3 CoD games will probably still be released for Playstation

We probably already know which games are in the contract between Actisivion and Sony. This year’s offshoot probably comes from Infinity Ward and is a direct successor to Call of Duty: Modern Warfare (2019). Two games from the franchise are said to follow in 2023, both of which should no longer come for PS4 and Xbox One. The annual title is coming, according to insiders Tom Henderson by Treyarch, and Warzone will presumably get a new, completely overhauled version.

In short, that would mean:

  • Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 – 2022 für PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, PC
  • CoD 2023 by Treyarch – 2023 for PS5, Xbox Series X/S, PC
  • Warzone 2 – 2023 for PS5, Xbox Series X/S, PC

Advantages also possible without exclusivity: The fact that these three CoD games are also to be released for Playstation does not mean that Microsoft cannot offer some advantages exclusively for the Xbox. For example, the titles for 2023 could already appear in Game Pass at launch. In addition, some bonuses such as additional content and/or better optimization could be waiting for us here.

Warzone could get a successor in 2023. The Free2Play offshoot is currently all about the Caldera map in the Pacific:

And what happens afterwards?

The well-informed Bloomberg reporter Jason Schreier does not dare to make a binding statement about the future of the CoD series either. But his prognosis is clearly in the direction of Xbox exclusivity. After all, Microsoft also proceeded in the same way with other acquisitions: Existing contracts are kept, service games remain on their respective platforms for the time being and new announcements are only made for Xbox and PC.

Should CoD actually no longer appear for Playstation, Sony would lose an annual loss of 87.5 to 262.6 million dollars in remuneration, according to estimates, and Call of Duty would be missing as an important driving force for console sales.

We know that buying Activision Blizzard is a hotly debated topic. We ask you to always have respectful and constructive discussions with one another.
