Horizon Forbidden West: These features are only available in the PS5 version

Aloy experiences her new adventure not only on the PS5, but also on the PS4.

Horizon Forbidden West is a cross-generation title, so it appears for both the PS5 and the PS4. In terms of content, the game does not differ on the two systems, but there are differences between the versions. Game Director Mathijs de Jonge asked exactly what these are during our exclusive preview of Horizon Forbidden West.

The differences between the PS5 and PS4 versions at a glance

According to the creative director, the main differences between the PS5 version of Forbidden West and the PS4 variant are as follows:

  • DualSense-Support
Not surprisingly, the new Horizon game supports the special features of the DualSense controller, i.e. haptic feedback and adaptive triggers. According to de Jonge, all weapons should feel different thanks to the DualSense. GamePro editor Linda hasn’t tried all of the weapons yet, but she could definitely tell differences in how the gun feels.
  • 3D-Audio
Forbidden West also uses the PS5’s Tempest 3D Audio Tech and is said to offer a particularly spatial and engaging soundscape on Sony’s latest console. You can find out more about 3D audio in our corresponding guide.
  • Cinematic Lighting even outside of cutscenes
On the PS5 you get cinematic lighting, i.e. particularly realistic and cinematic lighting effects including dynamic shadows, etc., both during cutscenes and during the game. On the PS4, however, the cinematic lighting is limited to the cutscenes.
  • Higher level of detail
On the PS5 there are significantly more and much finer graphic details to see, for example on Aloy’s face, her armor or the ground textures. But even in the game world it will be possible to make out more details at a distance than on the PS4.

In addition, the loading times are of course significantly shorter than on Sony’s Last Gen system due to the built-in SSD of the PS5. When it comes to content, PS4 owners don’t have to worry about missing out.
