iOS 15.4 allows you to use Face ID with a mask and without Apple Watch

Users without Apple Watch will finally be able to unlock their iPhone with Face ID and mask.

Face ID and masks have never gotten along like Touch ID gloves. However Apple has been developing a new way to make Face ID work with masks. First it was with iOS 14.4 and the option to unlock the iPhone with the Apple Watch and now with iOS 15.4, which allows unlock iPhone with Face ID and mask and without Apple Watch.

How to unlock iPhone with Face ID and mask without Apple Watch

The normal thing is that after installing iOS 15.4, as soon as you restart the iPhone, it will appear a splash screen to set up Face ID with a mask and without Apple Watch. If it didn’t appear, or if you decided to set up this feature later, follow these steps:

  1. Go into Settings > Face ID and passcode.
  2. Enter your unlock code.
  3. Turn on the switch Use Face ID with a mask.
  4. Follow the instructions for re-register Face ID to use with a mask (you don’t need to wear it)
  5. If you’re wearing glasses on the first scan, iPhone will prompt you to remove them for the second scan.

Is Face ID less secure when this option is activated?

Technically, Face ID is more accurate when we use our entire face and not only the area of our eyes, which is the only one in which the scan is performed when we wear a mask and activate this option. So yes, Face ID is less secure with this option enabled as it has fewer recognition zones.

Face ID performs best when configured to fully recognize the user’s face.

But nevertheless, this does not mean that Face ID is insecure when activating this option. I have been able to test it with different people with a mask, and it has only been unlocked with my face.

How to add glasses to Face ID

Something interesting that this new function offers is the option of being able to register different glasses that you use often to make the system even more secure by using the glasses as a part of facial recognition. You can register multiple glasses, though it doesn’t work with sunglasses.

So that Face ID can recognize you if you wear a mask, it is advisable that you add all the models of glasses that you usually wear. If you’re wearing a mask and sunglasses, Face ID won’t work.

To do so, simply go to Settings > Face ID and passcode and under “Use Face ID with a mask” there will be an option to add glasses. Face ID recognition will start, which you will need to do with your glasses on.
