Xbox is getting an exclusive that’s ‘like Monster Hunter’, according to insiders

Monster Hunter could soon have competition.
Monster Hunter could soon have competition.

Microsoft is on fire with the acquisitions of ZeniMax and Activision Blizzard. The studio and publisher shopping spree seems to be starting to pay off in terms of exclusive games. But that’s probably not enough for the Xbox team, because if several insiders have their way, another title has been commissioned from the third-party studio Certain Affinity. It is said to be a “game like Monster Hunter for Xbox”.

That’s what ‘Monster Hunter’ for Xbox is all about

Unfortunately, there is not much information about the project with the code name “Suerte” at the moment. Except that it’s based on Monster Hunter. So is it a clone of the successful Capcom franchise? Probably not, since the Monster Hunter games have a very “Japanese” style, but Suerte is in the works at an American studio.

In addition, Monster Hunter World is also available for Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S – so it does not need a copy. So far we can only assume that the focus is on fighting big monsters and that we’re talking about an action-adventure or action role-playing game. The Monster Hunter comparison has to come from somewhere.

When is Suerte expected to appear? The well-connected games journalist Jeff Grubb started the rumor in his Podcast GrubbSnax. Reported shortly afterwards Windows Central with an article that seems to confirm the leak through other sources. In fact, we also find out here a planned period in which the game should be shown: Sometime between 2023 and 2024. A release before 2024 is therefore not to be expected.

And who is Certain Affinity? The developer studio behind Suerte shouldn’t mean anything to many, since it’s primarily a support team. Founded by former Bungie developers, Certain Affinity has a long history of working with Microsoft, primarily on the Halo series. The studio’s other projects are also mostly first-person shooters and multiplayer games like Call of Duty and Left 4 Dead.

So a Monster Hunter doesn’t really fit into the portfolio. But Guerrilla Games has also made the leap from FPS (Killzone) for action-adventure (Horizon Zero Dawn), to name just one example. So why not Certain Affinity?

Most recently, Certain Affinity worked on Halo Infinite with:

Will such projects soon become redundant for Microsoft?

That external studios are commissioned with developments is nothing unusual. Sony and Microsoft in particular have increased their respective lineups in this way in recent years without having to hire more people.

However, the Xbox team in particular not only had good experiences with this practice and had to cancel Scalebound, for example. In fact, with the acquisitions of Activision and Bethesda, Microsoft will soon have so many studios under its umbrella that orders from third-party studios may no longer be necessary.
