Elden Ring: Boss says he’s rediscovered his love for Toxic Swamps – Fans: “Has he got a bang?”.

In a new interview with GameInformer, FromSoftware boss Hidetaka Miyazaki gave a detailed explanation of the upcoming game Elden Ring. It also featured a tradition from previous games that gives long-time fans flashbacks: Toxic Swamps.

who is Hidetaka Miyazaki? This is the President of FromSoftware, writer and game designer. He is the creative mind behind the Dark Souls series, Demon’s Souls, Bloodborne and Sekiro.

What is this tradition? Anyone who has played through previous FromSoftware titles knows them: swamps. In each of these games, without exception, there is at least one swamp. Most of these are even poisonous, which makes crossing them even more dangerous.

A kind of love-hate relationship has developed in the community over the years. A prominent example of this is the swamp from Dark Souls 1, below the city of shame, which is considered to be particularly feared.

These swamps are typically murky and fraught with danger. If you move through the muddy areas, your movement speed will be reduced. In addition, you will be poisoned if you spend too much time in the mud.

They’re usually more feared than loved by the community. Some even hate them. Accordingly, a statement by Miyazaki is now causing a stir among fans.

Miyazaki on Creating Toxic Swamps: ‘It Just Happens’

This is what the Elden Ring boss said: In an interview with GameInformer Miyazaki commented on the design of certain areas and areas in general. It was also about the dreaded swamps. The developer says:

How the player feels upon hitting that area is another story. While developing the game, I rediscovered my love for Toxic Swamps. I know what people think of this, but suddenly I realize I’m in the process of building one and I just can’t help myself. It just happens. – Miyazaki

This statement caused amused frowns in the community. A reddit post with reactions to it just went through the roof. Currently (as of January 29, 12:10 p.m.) the Posted by user TheVideoGaymer over 4300 upvotes.

The post humorously questions Miyazaki’s memory and asks, “Does he have a bang?”. Because if he’s only just rediscovered his love for Toxic Swamps, why has every one of the 5 FromSoftware games since 2011 featured at least one swamp?

Some players are now even worried that the earlier swamps were only partially implemented “half-heartedly” and that Miyazaki is now only reaching for the “final form” in Elden Ring. But there are also players who are looking forward to the challenge and are curious about what awaits them.

Here are some comments:

  • AramaticFire: “Honestly…I’m a bit scared now of the open-world swamp that’s coming our way.”
  • UnassumingSingleGuy: “Maybe the Toxic Swamps in Dark Souls 3 and Sekiro were just there because it was tradition. I can’t wait to see how awful the new Toxic Zones are.”
  • heideggerfanfiction: “I’ve never looked forward to hating something passionately.”
  • Za_Worldo-Experience: “This is probably the worst post about Elden Ring…”

So there is a mixture of concern, fear, confusion and anticipation in the comments.

The new swamp might come with a new status effect

What do we know about the new swamp so far? So far, the area has not been seen in any gameplay trailer. Even in the network test, players could not go there.

In the interview, however, Miyazaki revealed what meanness awaits the players this time. Because in Elden Ring there is “Scarlet Rot”, translated: “Scarlet Rot”, a kind of new effect that can affect characters and players.

In relation to the story and setting of Elden Ring, there is something particularly terrifying that exists and persists in this world. I’m going to say the name now so you can look forward to it, it’s called Scarlet Blight: It’s something a little different from Poison or Toxicity, but I hope you’re looking forward to it. – Miyazaki

In what form this disease is involved and what role it plays in the story, we do not yet know. Possibly this disease affects NPCs and creatures and makes them even worse. Such elements would not be new to FromSoftware games.

When is Elden Ring coming out? The official release is on February 25th. So in less than a month you can see for yourself how bad the Scarlet Blight really is and how dangerous the new swamp is going to be this time.

Or maybe there are several again? It would be conceivable, because Elden Ring will have a huge open game world with different regions.

In addition to large legacy dungeons, there are also numerous optional dungeons with mini-bosses and treasures. Elden Ring recently featured one of these dungeons:
