iBeer, the iPhone app that allowed you to “drink beer”, generated $ 20,000 a day
iBeer, one of the most famous apps from the early days of the iPhone, generated a huge amount of money every day.
The creator of the world famous iPhone application ‘iBeer’ has given an interview revealing the incredible amounts of money generated by the popular app. Steve Sheraton has revealed that, in its heyday, iBeer was able to generate up to $20,000 a day in income.
Steve Sheraton is the founder of Hottrix and developer of the world famous app ‘iBeer’. This app simulated that we were drinking a beer using our iPhone’s accelerometer, and it saved its developer from bankruptcy.
One of the most famous apps at the time
In a new interview with MEL, Sheraton reveals how a video he uploaded to YouTube showing him “drinking a beer with his iPhone” using a simple video file saved him. The video racked up millions of views with users asking to do just that on their iPhone, all before the App Store and “apps” existed.
I was broke, just trying to get by, living on a friend’s couch, and suddenly the video was getting millions of views, which was a lot in 2007. People were begging me to let them have that ‘thing’ on their phones didn’t even have a word for ‘app’ yet.
Shortly after, Apple itself contacted Sheraton to tell him about the imminent applications that were going to come to the iPhone with the App Store. Sheraton programmed the app to use the iPhone’s accelerometer to trigger looping video and image sequences, and posted it on the App Store at a price of 2,99 euros.
The app reached 90 million downloads as of March 14, 2014, is the latest known data, and since then the developer has made the app a “freemium” experience where you simply pay to remove ads or for extra features. The app continues to accumulate downloads and, despite the numerous copies, it is the original.
