Sony wants to buy Destiny developer Bungie for 3.2 billion euros

Sony wants to buy former Halo developer Bungie, as has just been officially confirmed.

The buying spree of the big ones continues. After Microsoft announced its plan to buy Activision Blizzard in early 2022, it is now Sony’s turn. As the former Halo and current Destiny developer just did via official blog post announced that they want to join Sony from now on, who in turn want to buy the American studio for 3.2 billion euros.

That means the deal for Bungie and Destiny 2

Like the side Gamesindustry reported, Bungie will operate as an independent subsidiary going forward, and will henceforth remain a developer producing multiplatform games. The statement of Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO Jim Ryan:

We’ve had a strong partnership with Bungie since the launch of the Destiny franchise, and I couldn’t be more excited to welcome the studio to the PlayStation family.

Bungie decides: The former Halo developer is said to have the ability to self-publish games and choose which platform their titles will be offered on.

This means that it cannot be ruled out that a game like Destiny 2 will continue to take place on Xbox consoles in the years to come. In a Q&A was also assured the community, the shooter remains playable on all platforms even after the takeover.

This is Halo inventor Bungie

The American studio, founded in 1991, was known in the late 90s for the tactical Myth series before the big breakthrough came in 2001 when it was taken over by Microsoft and Halo. By 2010, a total of five Master Chief games had appeared.

Detached from Microsoft and published by Activision, Destiny was released in 2014, which is now one of the most successful multiplayer shooters with its sequel. The two companies have been going their separate ways since 2019, and Bungie owns the rights to the sci-fi shooter.

Sony’s foray into live service territory

With the planned purchase of Bungie, Sony is not only bringing in great expertise in multiplayer games or shooters. According to Jim Ryan, the acquisition will further strengthen Sony’s multi-platform development and Games as a Service division.

Sony PlayStation has already established its own exclusive games such as Horizon Zero Dawn, Death Stranding and God of War on the PC market in recent years. It remains exciting to see how this strategy will continue in the future.

Sony’s first response to Microsoft’s Activision Blizzard deal?

On January 18, Microsoft and Activision Blizzard announced the biggest deal in gaming history to date. The publisher and developer should enrich the Xbox and PC division with its games for 68.7 billion US dollars by spring 2023 at the latest.

The big question was how Sony would react to the planned purchase. The purchase of Bungie seems to be the first answer, although the deal was most likely negotiated last year and can be understood more as a continuation of the long-term strategic direction. We have possible scenarios for how Sony could continue to react to Microsoft’s spending spree captured in a mind game.
