New MMORPG is so popular on Steam that players are in queuing hell

The hardcore MMORPG Mortal Online 2 recently launched on Steam and the developers probably underestimated the interest in the online role-playing game. More players turned up than expected, and due to some questionable design decisions, players were sometimes stuck in queues for 24 hours or more. Read the whole story here on MeinMMO!

What is Mortal Online 2? Mortal Online 2 is a hardcore MMORPG on Steam that comes from Swedish developer Star Vault. In Mortal Online 2 you actively fight in first person. You have to aim and time your attacks well so that you hit something.

There’s full, always-on PvP where you can lose everything if you die. You should also be able to learn around 600 skills. As said, the game is aimed at hardcore MMORPG PvP freaks.

Its predecessor, Mortal Online, had just over 1,100 players at its peak (via SteamDB). But Mortal Online 2 blew all the developers’ imaginations.

Mortal Online 2 much more successful than developers thought

What happened after launch? Mortal Online 2 launched on Steam on January 25, 2022 and was arguably more successful than the developers thought. According to PCGamer, the game has already sold over 110,000 copies. At its peak, just under 10,000 players were online at the same time. On average there are around 3,000 players in the days since release (via Steamcharts).

This in turn led to massive problems with the login. Players reported queues that lasted 24 hours or longer. One player even claimed that he had to wait 36 straight hours before finally getting back into the game.

But what are the reasons for these enormous waiting times? One reason should be that a “feature” of the game is that all players on a continent gamble on a single server. Its capacities were probably reached faster than the devs suspected.

In addition, it lacked important features from many MMORPGs. Because in Mortal Online 2 you will not be automatically kicked off the server if you are AFK for too long. Instead, once you’re in the game, you can stay online forever, blocking your slot on the server.

New MMORPG gets 3 patches in 1st week, destroys everything, has to reset 24 hours

Players are mad about queues from hell

How are the players reacting? In return, players shower the game with negative reviews on Steam. As of February 7th, 2022, just under 50% of the current 3,896 reviews are positive. And that despite the fact that many players appreciate the game and enjoy playing it – if only they could.

However, the queues from hell frustrate players and some players make matters worse by clinging to their in-game slot and never logging out again, certain they’ll have to wait in line for a good day afterwards.

A really great game that looks good and finally takes up the old values of an MMORPG a la Ultima Online.

It’s really fun and the combat system is challenging and not as monotonous as the others.

Now comes the big BUT:

By the time you’re in the game, the average citizen’s free time is over.

Spent 3 hours in queue yesterday with no success. Went to bed frustrated. Had the game for a week now and 2/3 of my hours of play was on hold to even get on the server.

Once you’re in, great, no question. But like I said, come in [ist] a disaster.

And until you get a handle on that, I’d advise everyone to wait before buying.

Steam-User Elron in seiner Reviews on Steam

Developers are changing the concept, moving away from “single server”.

What do the developers want to do? The developers got in touch on February 6th via Steam finally to the problems and declared with a heavy heart that they will now implement more servers and instances into the game. That would contradict the original concept of the game, in which everyone should be on the same server, but there was no other way to deal with the onslaught of players.

But there have already been minor patches and adjustments that should increase the player count a bit. In addition, the developers advise only hanging around in the tutorial area and not traveling straight into the big, wide world. In addition, the subscription fees will be suspended for the time being, as long as players are so difficult to get into the game.

So much for the current problems and planned solutions for Mortal Online 2. If you want to know if the game is still good, then read the review by our MMORPG expert Alexander Leitsch:

I’ve been playing MMORPGs for 15 years: I’ve never died in Mortal Online 2 as many times as I have.
