According to a theory by YouTuber Vaatividya, the creatures in the intermediate land cannot die.

I’m sorry, what? – In the in-between of Elden Ring shall there be no death? And that despite the fact that we’ve killed all sorts of creatures? In fact, they are not in contradiction to each other, although of course it sounds that way at first. Because the lore of Elden Ring Souls is typically extremely complex, the YouTuber Vaatividya explained a lot in a video. Including how the concept of death was removed from the in-between and what came in its place.

Spoiler alert: This article contains spoilers and interpretations of the Elden Ring lore, including key characters.

death removed

It’s all about this: YouTuber Vaatividya has made a name for himself as a Souls lore expert, and with good reason. The stories of the games are relatively abstract and difficult to understand. The same is true for Elden Ring in general, even if certain parts of the story and individual quest lines are more tangible this time. Vaatividya explains what it is like to die in the intermediate land.

Marika and the Elden Ring: First, the YouTuber explains the Elden ring. This is a means by which a great and otherworldly god influences the land between. Loyal to the Elden ring is Queen Marika, chosen to serve as his goddess in the Between Lands. By the time we start our journey, Marika has disappeared. But before that, according to the YouTuber, she allowed herself a lot.

Marika removed death: As is often the case with divine creatures, Vaatividya is sure that Marika had her own plans. You have to know that the Elden Ring is composed of runes – and Marika just had the cheek to take out one rune, namely the death rune. The YouTuber believes that she has “removed the concept of death from the intermediate country”. This means that living beings there can no longer meet their predetermined death.

Souls return to the Earth Tree

Now it may confuse you that, according to this theory, every creature in the land between is immortal, but you’ve already killed all of them. However, according to the YouTuber, this is because these creatures do not die, but switch to another form of existence as soon as the time is actually ready.

The spirits, or souls, of the “slain” will return to the Earth Tree. This absorbs their ashes – and the ashes that we can use to summon spirits for support are therefore those that have not yet found their way back to the earth tree. The echoes we receive from big bosses, Vaatividya thinks, are also a form of ghosts.

The YouTuber also includes the spirit ashes that support us in the fight in his theory.

Just life after death?

Now the whole thing might sound a bit like “afterlife” and not like our classic idea of immortality. However, the matter is a bit more complex: Vaatividya believes that not all creatures return to the earth tree.

In this article we will introduce you to all the endings of Elden Ring:

But there are also those who, according to the YouTuber, cannot find peace and simply continue to wander through the inland undead. These are the skeletons that we encounter in many places in the game.

Marika’s power over death: There is also another aspect, namely that Vaatividya thinks that Marika holds the power over the “real”, the predetermined death. She didn’t throw the death rune in the organic waste, but gave it to her faithful companion Maliketh, who used it in his black blade. With this, the YouTuber believes, he is able to unleash the predetermined death at Marika’s behest.

Vaati’s theories have caused some discussion among us. The main question was: how does it fit that death has been replaced by the souls of all creatures returning to the earth tree, yet almost everything we kill in the world is back once we have rested at grace? Usually, FromSoftware has a lore explanation for mechanics like this – and if all creatures went straight back to the earth tree on death, they wouldn’t be back in place after we rested.

I have two theories about this: Either the return to the Earth Tree is just a transitional stage before beings return to the In-Between, in a cycle of immortality – or they only return to the Earth Tree when “their time has come”. The living beings would thus be revived until the time of their intended return came and they would change into another form of existence.

We’re curious to hear your theories on the connection between lore and game mechanics in this case. Feel free to tell us in the comments.
