Nintendo buys… not a new studio, but a huge chunk of land

Bling, bling - Nintendo was on a shopping spree.

Bling, bling – Nintendo was on a shopping spree.

Nintendo keeps buying. After a long-standing partner was recently taken over, the shopping tour is now continuing. But Nintendo doesn’t buy a development studio like Sony or a mammoth publisher like Microsoft, but… a plot of land. Sounds funny, but that’s how it is. The piece of land turns out to be quite large and is right next to the property where the current HQ is located. We already know what is to be built on the property.

Nintendo makes a new purchase and expands its own headquarters

That’s what it’s about: While Microsoft, Sony, the Embracer Group, Epic and Tencent are buying new companies in a race, Nintendo is content with a small plot of land in the vicinity of the headquarters. Of course, that’s not entirely true: Nintendo recently bought long-term partner SRD, which has been in the same building for many years:765

In addition, the plot next to Nintendo’s current main office not exactly small, quite the opposite (it costs the equivalent of almost 37 million euros, and it’s not exactly cheap either). According to the official Announcement by Nintendo the piece of land itself is an area of 10,028.55㎡. In any case, a few football pitches and miniature golf courses fit on it. Or a cool Nintendo theme park like this one:

But, bad news: Even if almost everyone automatically hopes that visitors will now have to crawl through pipes, overcome abysses and avoid lava to get to Nintendo headquarters, we have to disappoint you. Instead, just another, despicable office building is to be built on the property. Apparently without any green tubes, yellow blocks and goombas.

This is planned: A building is to be built on an estimated 38,000 square meters that goes by the nice name “Corporate Headquarters Development Center, Building No. 2”. At least that’s the current working title. It is said to have 12 floors and be around 72 meters high. The project is all about “R&D”, i.e. additional reinforcement of research and development.

What do you think of it and how would you design the lot if you were Nintendo?
