Mages in Elden Ring are just cowardly ranged fighters? A PvP player impressively proves the opposite
Magic has a reputation in parts of the Elden Ring community for being played only by people who find the game too difficult or who are too scared to engage in hand-to-hand combat. A player has now demonstrated in a PvP duel how false these claims are.
What’s the problem with magic?
- A section of the community feels that magic would make the game too easy and that its users would therefore “not play it properly”.
- Close combat without tools is the be-all and end-all, and since magic relies primarily on long-range combat, it’s too easy.
- It’s the “git gud” part of the community that believes you can’t play games like Elden Ring or Dark Souls properly until you ignore half of the features.
The fact that magic is much more than cowardly long-distance combat is impressively demonstrated by reddit user DeathtosoproC in a clip that shows him in a PvP duel:
Overall, the clip attracted a lot of attention and has over 16,000 upvotes on reddit and has over 1300 comments (as of April 14, 12:30 p.m.).
Player defends mage builds and gets a lot of encouragement
This can be seen in the clip: The user plays a pure mage build, but does not use the usual spells that count as OP. He also uses the Carian spells that rely on sword magic.
This allows him to use magic attacks, but they use sword animations. His build is sort of a magic swordsman, a hybrid of ranged and melee magic. Some spells he uses are Carian Square and Collapsing Stars.
The duel is heated, but he quickly manages to dominate his opponent thanks to his flexible style of play. He doesn’t seem prepared for melee magic either, as you rarely see that in PvP.

He himself asks, “Does everyone still have mage builds, or is this acceptable?” Directly addressing that part of the community that smiles down on mages. But there are hardly any reactions from them, much more praise from other users.

Most commenters agree and many now want to try a similar build. Basically, most agree: Everyone should play the way he or she thinks is right.
Many players are impressed by how accurately and quickly he switches and casts his spells while playing aggressively and not letting the opponent escape.
But there are also magic critics outside of the “git gud” faction. Some of them criticize that they constantly encounter mages who only spam their spells without actually fighting. In this case it isn’t, so they don’t have any problems with this build.
