Elden Ring: Horrifying screams at night have a horrible origin

In Elden Ring we encounter dark stories and chilling details around every corner.

If you’ve ever wandered the starting regions of Limgrave at night, you’ve probably been surprised by the bloodcurdling screams. These can already be heard where you wake up at the very beginning of Elden Ring. The agonized roar is truly eerie, but its source is not that easy to trace. However, one fan on Reddit succeeded.

The origin of the shit

It’s all about this: You can only hear the screams at night, in front of the stranded graveyard, especially where you can jump down into the tutorial cave on the right. You can also hear them when you walk right towards the lake in the open game world at the very first grace, the first step – and right there, near the shore, you will also find the origin of the roar.

This is probably behind it: User Finnasforealus writes on Reddit:

I just realized after 200 hours these guys are screaming and it’s freaking horrible.

In addition, the Elden Ring fan shows a clip in which the player character walks around the crucified corpses near the lake shore. In fact, they seem to relive their agony loudly at night. By the way, the corpses are not nailed to Christian crosses, but tied to bows, similar to runic bows. Their skin is scorched, although two of the dead appear relatively intact with their clothing.

More on Elden Ring:

As can be seen from the comments, many fans were already familiar with the screams, but some couldn’t figure out where they were coming from. If we stand where it goes down in the tutorial, we could think that the origin is down there. But if we jump down, the eerie background noise becomes quieter.

Quite a few fans have heard the screams on the lake shore and have been tempted to jump into a deep hole. DarkeaterFilip admits:

[…] This caused me to jump down the death hole in the Southwest of First Grace, thinking the screams were coming from down there.

Others know that. Vicomte99 admits:

Haha bro. I did exactly the same.

These are the tormented souls.

Here you can find them.

That’s why we can hear the screams in both places: The fall cannot be survived. However, the said hole is the reason why we can hear the screams near the descent into the tutorial cave, because it is right above us at this point.

By the way, if we try to attack them, the corpses won’t respond. Only when the sun rises do they fall silent again. Oddly enough, some other crucified corpses don’t make a peep. Maybe lore master Vaatividya will explain it to us one day.

Have you already noticed this eerie detail and have you figured out where the screams are coming from yourself? What could it be story-wise?
