Fine tuning for the Lübeck Cougars in Bad Segeberg

The shrill sound of a whistle and the short, loud commands can already be heard in the parking lot. The annual training camp of the second division football club Lübeck Cougars at the sports facility of SV Eintracht Segeberg is in full swing. From Good Friday to Easter Sunday, the mountain lions are on the field for a total of nine hours, divided into four training sessions. Here the Lübeckers are getting the finishing touches for the 2022 season, which begins on May 22 (3 p.m. / Buniamshof) with the home game against the Hamburg Huskies.

Hard training program in Bad Segeberg

“It’s a tough program,” admits Defense Coordinator Florian Dannehl, “but it has to be once a year. And it also shows who is really ready to torture themselves to the point of exhaustion.” Because there are no long breaks during the units. Now and then a sip of water, that’s about it. Otherwise, the 40 players are almost always on the move, interrupted only by explanations and announcements from the coaches.

And they were happy. “The intensity is high, but the boys are keeping up. We were able to implement a lot,” said Dannehl on behalf of the Lübeck coaching team. The toughest session was on Saturday morning, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. the mountain lions were drilled, sometimes in smaller position groups, then again eleven against eleven to study the moves.

The US trio of the Lübeck Cougars were challenged immediately

That took a lot out of the substance, even with the US imports of cougars, who have hardly had time to catch their breath in their new home. The pass defenders only came on Wednesday afternoon Greg Williams and Ronald Tomasello as well as running back Ashton Heard at Hamburg Airport. From there they went to Lübeck, Thursday they completed the first training session with their new team, followed by the training camp in Bad Segeberg from Friday to Sunday.

Quarterback Clark sets the tone for Lübeck’s footballers

While the US trio is gradually adjusting, another is already showing his leadership qualities. Quarterback Jadrian Clark, who joined the Cougars from the Hamburg Sea Devils, sets the tone on and off the pitch. Tips for the other players, but also clear announcements if something doesn’t work.

The playmaker knows a lot is expected of him and his US counterparts. “We are the pros among amateurs, so of course there is a lot of pressure on us. But I think it’s great, it motivates me even more,” says the 27-year-old, who has big plans for the Cougars.

10th/11th and 24./25. September: Relegation to GFL1

“The club has a solid foundation and is well organised. And the training opportunities with our own artificial turf and the gym on Vorwerker Straße are unique in Germany. We have the chance to create something special here. I want to get into GFL1 with the Cougars and be number one up north,” explains Clark. The foundations for this are now being created in Bad Segeberg…
