Halo Infinite multiplayer should go in a direction that would have pissed many people off

It will still be a few days until Halo Infinite Season 2 starts. The new content available in it is intended to breathe new life into multiplayer, which has been noticeably lost in the past few weeks and months. It would also have been a real breath of fresh air for the Halo series if the multiplayer had gone in a direction that an insider has now revealed.

Because according to one Tweet by podcaster Chris Ray Gun 343 Industries initially apparently intended to set up an “Overwatch clone” with the infinite multiplayer. So the shooter should contain heroes with asymmetrical and different abilities, which would then have competed in arena matches.

“Multiple Hero-based Prototypes”

Bloomberg journalist Jason Schreier confirmed on Reddit, that 343 was working on several “hero-based prototypes”. At a later point in time during development, however, the decision was made to use multiplayer in its current form.

And even if these are still rumours, this development is probably a good thing, because a hero shooter would have upset the die-hard fans of the series in particular. The reason: One of the core fascination of the first Halo multiplayer was the identical starting requirements for every player. You started with the same weapon setup and then tried to gain an advantage on the maps using the (power) weapons placed there, among other things.

Already criticism of Season 2

A hero system with different abilities would probably have thrown this concept completely overboard and might have been conveyable for a separate spin-off, but not for a main part of the series. The fact that 343 Industries ultimately opted for a more traditional approach should certainly have spared the team a lot of criticism.

However, the fan community is still moaning about the previously published roadmap for the second season of the shooter. Initially, it only brings two new maps and a handful of new game modes, until the announced co-op campaign we have to wait until the end of the summer. The official start of the second season is May 3, 2022.
