Massive Final Fantasy statue costs almost €11,000 – Even the creator of the series thinks that’s excessive

FF6 "Terra Branford"-Statue

Square Enix has announced the price of a new Final Fantasy VI statue. The statue is based on Terra Branford, the game’s main character, and will cost almost €11,000. Even FF creator Hironobu Sakaguchi finds the high price too exaggerated.

What is this statue? The new statue features Terra Branford, the first female protagonist in the FF series. The statue is based on the FFVI cover art drawn by Yoshitaka Amano. Amano is a Japanese artist who has drawn the majority of Final Fantasy game covers and has long been responsible for character design.

Square Enix states the statue package includes:

  • the body of FF6 protagonist Terra Branfords
  • the “magical armor body”
  • a replacement upper body part of Terra with different poses
  • a replacement main body part with different modeling
  • a Final Fantasy 6 logo plate.

In addition to the Terra Branford statue itself, there are three types of moogle bodies included in the pack. Moogles are small, recurring beasts from the FF series. The statue is produced by the Japanese statue manufacturer Prime 1 Studio.

FF Creator: “Are you okay, Square Enix?”

This is what the Creator says: Hironobu Sakaguchi is one of the forefathers of the FF series and was involved in the creation of Kingdom Hearts, among other things.

He left Square Enix in 2004 and started his own company called Mistwalker. His current project is the game FANTASIAN, a role-playing game released in 2021 for iOS devices.

In a tweet, Sakaguchi compares the price of the statue with the production of the dioramas for his current project FANTASIAN and asks whether that isn’t a bit much money.

What is a diorama? A diorama is a showcase in which scenes with model figures and model landscapes are presented in front of an often semi-circular, painted background.

Dioramas often show animals in their natural environment or historical scenes.

Fans: “This is really heartbreaking”

What are the reactions? In addition to Hironobu Sakaguchi, numerous community members commented on the price of the statue:

  • @Mirtrione via Twitter: “I’ve been a die-hard Terra and FF6 fan for almost 30 years. I have a high disposable income. I was your target customer, I thought. But £9,000? no Not even me. I’m out.”
  • @finalfanjessi via Twitter: “This price is insane! I mean it’s literally the price of a new car. I know quality will be expensive but this is just sick […].”
  • @Cobheran via Twitter: “I absolutely adore Terra and absolutely had plans to buy it, but was expecting $3,000-$4,000, not $12,000. It’s really heartbreaking, but I have to pass.”
  • @Akarisened via Twitter: “I was willing to pay $3,000 to $4,000 for it… But what you’re asking for it is absolutely insane. […].”

Twitch streamer Yunalescka also finds the price of the statue too high, as she says on Twitter. Yunalescka owns one of the largest “Final Fantasy” collections in the world and boasts over 3,500 collectibles. But she has to do without the statue because of the price.

Yunalescka Tweet FF6 Terra Statue
I still can’t believe my dream statue cost $12,000. It’s the only thing I can’t afford in my collection and it makes me sad. Of course it HAS to be from my favorite game, right? She is perfect. Terra is so beautiful. I love her so much. To those who buy this please enjoy for me. – Yunalescka via Twitter

Gaming fans love to spend big bucks on their favorite titles. It doesn’t matter if we’re talking about skins, DLCs or merchandise. The players are often willing to invest hundreds to thousands of euros in their hobby.

In addition to valuable collectible figures, especially cosmetic in-game content is bought for a lot of money these days. A CS:GO player recently showed how much he spent on skins over the years.
