Pokémon: Mew only exists because there were 300 bytes left on the module

Mew was actually only planned as a bad joke that the development team came up with.

Former Nintendo President Satoru Iwata was a curious man who even got his own series of interviews. In the “Iwata asks” series, he regularly grabbed colleagues from the industry from whom he could elicit fun facts. One of the interviews revolves around the two very first Pokémon editions, green and red, which first appeared in Japan around 26 years ago.

The interviewees included Tsunekazu Ishihara, CEO of The Pokémon Company, and Shigeki Morimoto from Game Freak. During the interview, the two revealed a funny detail about one of the 151 included Pokémon, which actually only made it into the game as a joke.

Mew concocted as a prank

The two interviewees explained mischievously that Mew wasn’t supposed to make it into the game at all. The Pokémon only came into play at the very end, since the module was actually fully occupied in terms of storage space and no more changes were to be made towards the end of development.

Why does Mew still exist? At the end of development, the debug features were removed because they weren’t supposed to be in the full version of Pokémon Red and Green. This freed up just 300 bytes of storage space, which was promptly used for the implementation of Mew.

Actually, Mew shouldn’t even appear directly in the game, but should be revealed as part of an action after the release. However, due to a bug, some players noticed beforehand that Mew is integrated into the game. It looked to many like the Mew glitch was intentional, but it’s really just a little joke from the humorous fellow developers.

Mew boosts sales

The appearance of Mew and a planned promotional campaign boosted sales of the two Pokémon editions. Sales increased three to fourfold. Mew even made it into the blue and yellow editions that we had in Germany instead of the original green edition.

We’ll tell you exactly how the Mew glitch works in a separate article. If you already own Mew because you got it in Pokémon Sword and Shield, you can easily transfer the Pokémon to the external Pokémon Home database and carry it over to upcoming games like Pokémon Crimson and Crimson from there.
