The PS5 is finally getting VRR.

The time has finally come and Sony will soon be releasing a long-promised feature for the Playstation 5: The “Variable Refresh Rate”, or VRR for short. Microsoft implemented the graphics technology in the Xbox One back in 2018, and the Xbox Series X/S has supported the feature since launch. Now Sony is following suit “this week”, as stated on the Playstation blog called.

This is how VRR makes itself felt on your PS5

This is VRR: The variable refresh rate ensures that the frame rate of your console can be synchronized with that of your screen. Among other things, so-called screen tearing is to be avoided, which is caused by the fact that images are calculated on the console faster than they can be displayed on the television. The result is horizontal stripes and shifts in the image that can be distracting.

Here is an example of screen tearing in Nier Automata.

The respective software often counteracts the problem with V-Sync, which ties up resources that are freed up again by the VRR hardware solution. So look forward to clear and smooth images.

Requirement HDMI 2.1: If your TV or monitor doesn’t support HDMI 2.1, you won’t even be able to use many of the PS5’s features, including VRR. So make sure that the technology is implemented in the device of your choice and that you are also using a corresponding cable (the cable included with the PS5 supports HDMI 2.1).

A selection of suitable televisions that offer HDMI 2.1 can be found here:

Which games are supported? VRR does not work automatically, but must first be enabled by the respective developer studios with a patch for old games. In fact, you can also enable the option for incompatible titles for better video quality, but according to Sony, this can lead to undesirable graphic effects. New games will natively support VRR in the future.

With ALLM, the PS5 has received another interesting feature

Almost a month ago, Sony released the 22.01-05.00 update for the PS5, which hides another exciting acronym: ALLM. But what is that again?

ALLM stands for “Auto Low Latency Mode”. This technology ensures smooth communication between your TV and the PS5. When you start a game on the console, the screen automatically selects the best mode to reduce latency – so the image responds more quickly to your input on the controller. ALLM is also only available with HDMI 2.1.

Are you excited that the PS5 is finally getting VRR support?
