Battlefield 2042: Players are upset because popular mode was removed - "Map rotation doesn't make sense"

Battlefield 2042 has had a lot of negative headlines to contend with. Nevertheless, there are still some active players who also enjoy certain modes. “Flashback Conquest” was particularly popular, in which you could play the Conquest mode on old map classics. This has now fallen victim to the rotation and that is not well received by the fans.

What is this mode? Flashback Conquest let players play Conquest mode on old maps like Arica Harbor, but with the specialists from Battlefield 2042.

The mode belongs to Battlefield Portal and is accordingly in the rotation system, which regularly brings different modes while the others disappear until it is their next turn.

However, the removal of Flashback Conquest caused some frustration as players seemed to be having a lot of fun with it. There is a discussion going on in the subreddit about it.

Some demand: “DICE, make Flashback a permanent card in the portal area.”

Why was the mode removed? In fact, Flashback Conquest isn’t gone, it’s just put on hold. In Battlefield Portal, the different modes rotate once every 2 to 3 weeks.

So the mode will return, but players are still disappointed.

Why is the mode so popular? Most players are in complete agreement: it’s the cards and the smaller player counts. Here are some comments about it:

  • “Last night Arica Harbor was the most fun I’ve had in BF2042 since launch. Epic feel with only 64 players.” – sepltbadwy
  • “I also. The maps are so much better and the weapon progression actually worked. Why this isn’t a permanent mode is just beyond comprehension.” – Ice Cream Phoenix
  • “Oh man, I actually enjoyed Flashback Conquest a lot. As for most, it was the maps that were just more fun – except maybe El Alamein, which felt pretty much like BF2042’s open void).” – cenorexia

The criticism of the new Battlefield 2042 maps is not new and developer DICE has therefore been planning extensive revisions of the maps from the all-out warfare area for some time.

But currently they are very unpopular with most fans because they are too big and empty for many. The maximum number of 128 players is also seen critically by the fans, smaller rounds with 64 players are better.

Former Battlefield 3 developers who no longer work at DICE said that at the time.

The player IceCreamPheonix has a clear requirement: The current map rotation doesn’t make any sense to him.

Given the massive content lag, I don’t understand why they didn’t choose to put all maps in one rotation. That would almost double the number of cards. At the very least, Flashback Conquest should have been a permanent game mode in Portal.

Why isn’t the mode just permanently there? DICE has a problem here that is also recognized by the fans: the low player counts. They are now so low that there shouldn’t be too many modes in Battlefield 2042.

Otherwise there is a risk that the remaining players will be spread across too many modes, making matchmaking more difficult or even impossible. The Hazard Zone mode had this fate very early on after its release.

How bad is Battlefield 2042? The number of players in Battlefield 2042 is unfortunately devastating. Especially on Steam, the shooter can’t compete with its competitors. Even against those from their own house. Here is a comparison of the average number of players from the last 30 days, with some other games (via Steam Charts):

  • Battlefield 2042 – 2008
  • Battlefield V—10,041
  • Squad – 9,643
  • Hell Let Loose – 6,333

Whatever the solution, developer DICE still has some work to do on Battlefield 2042.

How do you think about that? Do you still play Battlefield 2042 at all? Which modes do you like to play the most?

Recently there was trouble because of leaks, in which allegedly planned XP boosters are mentioned: Battlefield 2042 is running badly – but instead of improving it, EA is said to be bringing XP boosts for real money
